“Ellan Vannin” is Manx Gaelic for “Isle of Man”

“Skiaynin Vannin” used to be painted on the side of old Manx Airlines aircraft. They are trying to revive the language over here – it’s mandatory at school and you get all sorts of grants and subsidies for encouraging it (a la Manx Airlines).

    Good explanation wysiwyg.

Whenenver I have had a long night flight on BA, they always warn about the risk of being woken if your seat belt cannot obviously be seen. This is over maybe 4-5 hours of “sleep” time so the seatbelt signhs are off.

    RE: New airlines.

Not a new airline…but one which I don’t recall being mentioned before.

I flew on them one from JNB to NLA on a 727-100, about 2 years ago. Different aircraft to the one on the picture which was damaged beyond economic repair, according to airliners.net

I believe they lease aircraft from Comair, which is a BA franchise in South Africa flying 727’s and 732’s. Their NLA run is now threatened, because SAA compete with them using an ERJ-145. Way more economic than a 727! This was all last year, so they may have pulled out by now.

    Well there is a workaround…but I don’t think it’s a topic for public discussion!

RE: I’m scared of Global Thermonuclear War 🙂

I’m sure some of our Aussie friends will bear me out on this…

A good few years ago (early-mid 90’s?) seismologists detected a powerful earth tremor originating somewhere in the interior of Ausralia. Nobody knows what it was. But the magnitude suggested either a huge earthquake (for which there was no real evidence, and bear in mind that Australia is, I think, located on a shield) or a nuclear explosion. Moreover, the epicentre was not to far away from a ranch bought by the Aum cult, the same one as repsonsible for the Tokyo subway Sarin attack.

Not entirely related, but it is good to see British Airways back in the FTSE 100. It’s a psychological glass ceiling they’ve gone through, so I should expect the share price to stabilise a little now.

Isn’t it odd that one airline is getting good news in the same week that United filed for bankruptcy!

    It is semi-mandatory though.

Whenever you are asleep on long haul, you are woken unless the cabin crew can spot your seat belt over your blanket.

On the other hand though, the presence of sky marshals with no guns could actually encourage a group of militants.

Well I guess that depends on whether the victim actually knows who attacked them. If not, how can they retaliate (apart from by nuking Afghanistan for no apparent reason)?

RE: Should Alan Shearer be called into the England squad?

    YES.

We play Nationwide sides every summer in a pre-season friendly. I saw us get beat by West Brom this summer 🙁

But I am English and used to live near Middlesbrough, so those are my true colours.

    RE: Pornography! ! ! !

Don’t worry Saab, there is no harm in a little bit of idealism.
    Quite a refreshing change, actually.
