RE: Aye Cayramba, haha very funny…
Funny how Americans voted for somebody else but they still want Bush.
Maybe they ought to get a real royal family to get over this personality and popularity obsession!

RE: SN Brussels Airlines …
Does SN actually fly anywhere other than Africa??!
RE: Euro bashing
You are saying that it is immoral in this day and age. But in Churchill’s time things were seen differently. We must not fall into the easy trap of imposing our morality and values onto another generation.
Besides, Churchill was a great man. He had certian bad qualities, but overall he had enough good qualities to save they day.

RE: Airport expansion plans unveiled
The principal economic arguement is that the UK, mainly London, can remain an international crossroads. Companies locate in London partly because air links to the rest of the world are pretty good.
RE: Euro bashing
I knmow that some of the sentiments I expressed were a little harsh. I did say, that I know not all of them are true. The point is that putting a bad spin on things, this is how the US is seen in certain quarters.
Maybe it has always been this way, but starting with the Bush election and geting worse (esp. after first Kyoto, then 11/9, then Iraq and the ICC) the US has gone down in the eyes of many and lost most of the lustre it once had. Now that this lustre has gone, the faults can be seen more easily.
Geforce – yes, I see your point. Churchill was a racist also, but for all that he did save Europe from 50 years of oppression. Him and a few others, obviously! But Thatcher wasn’t so much an isolationist, more anti-European. She tried hard to improve relations with the US for example.

RE: What About Belfast?
The cost of buliding the new London airport would be offset by the demolition of LHR and LGW, surely. That land would be worth a fair bit.
RE: ETOPS
Extended Twin engined Operations
Basocally, ETOPS is a certification which airlines need for each indivudal twin engined jet, if they want to stray away from a diversion airfield.
For example, flying London to New York, a non-ETOPS jet would have to remian within a certain one engine flying time from the nearest runway. I think it is 60 minutes? It would probably track northwards, near Iceland, Greenland and so on.
ETOPS allows this 60 minutes to be extended to up to 180 minutes, that is 3 hours single engine flying time from any suitable airfield. This allows much more direct routes to be flown, which may be quicker and more fuel efficient.
Exmples of aircraft which often have ETOPS certification are:
757, 767, 777, A300, A310, A330 etc.
The majority of long haul carriers certify at least some of their fleet.
RE: JMC and their 330’s
Hope it’s okay to hijack the thread…
I booked a small New Year break this week, flying MAN to MXP on Lufthansa, connecting through FRA. The itenary says A319-A321.
But the return leg is MXP-MUN and MUN-MAN, and it’s a CRJ-200 on both flights involving Munich.
Anyone know what to expect, or what seats to go for on the CRJ? I haven’t been on one before.
RE: SN Brussels Airlines …
It’s the other way round Noah!
The current state of affairs arose because goverments interfered. They preferred national flag carriers to get hometown slots. Grandfather rights (the biggie at LHR) stem from the time when BAA was a public company.
Also, Bermuda II is a disgraceful treaty.
So, if all these remnants of government interference were removed (by goverments, how else can it happen?) there would be no need for further public intervention.
Laissez faire!
RE: Airport expansion plans unveiled
Seems like a toss up between lots of airports, or the new airport in Kent.
I’d favour the first option, but to be honest I doubt in Britain today whether the necessary infrastructure will be there. Let’s go for a brand new London airport!
RE: Me again,
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-07-02 AT 09:51 PM (GMT)]Geforce, how can you compare Thatcher with Franco or Brezhnev?
Franco was a fascist, Brezhnev was lots of things, but Thatcher was a stateswoman who transfromed Britain. De Gaulle was pretentious and petty.
You see what us Europeans mean when we say we don’t always agree?!
The central difference really does seem to be a governmental one. From a European perspective, the US government is seen as corrupt (party funding, Bush and business), stupid (Bush + entire cabinet less Powell), xenophobic (ICC), hypocritical (eg. steel tarrifs, PLO and Al’Qaeda are terrorists but the IRA are freedom fighters), arrogant (Iraq, Kyoto) and racist (allow Mexicans in, but not Europeans).
Israel’s regime is seen as being hatred-filled and headed by a Jewish version of Hitler (you know who!)
Sure, people from the US and Israel will disagree with these notions. A lot of them are wrong or merely exaggerated, but some are true.
I invite all Americans, Israelis or anyone else to respond in similar fashion about Europe, or any EU states in particular. I know we have our faults!
I would also like to further the point that this stuff is general, and with ther exception of named individuals I do not intend to tar everyone with the same brush.
