    RE: Lufthansa to launch budget

Buzz definitely does internal French flights. Not sure about Ryanair in Germany?

    Skiyanin Vannin!

I’ve only seen G-MAJA in the IOM about twice! J41 wise, we usually get G-MAJD which is in BA colours. It usually operates to Dublin, Belfast and Birmingham.

Mainstay of the Manx fleet is the ATP – 3 aircraft in service. A fourth is owned but operated by someone else, probably another part of BA. They are actually preferable to the 146, as the seats are (believe it or not!) wider.

    RE: RED ALERT 2

I’m not into online gaming (I haven’t got ADSL yet) but I have a question:

I used to have Win 98 and RA2 worked fine. But when I got XP Pro, it either doesn’t work or it is very unstable. Any ideas?

    RE: Morocco invades Spain

    It’s very illuminating.

The Spanish are furious at “losing” a rock, but they still want Gibraltar back? In terms of land area – Ceuta, Melila and all the other bays and bits of rock are a lot bigger than Gib.

Hopefully, some in Spain will now appreciate the British sentiment towards our rock!

    Go figure? VERY American!

I don’t think there is much of a nationality issue in this forum. The general discussion forum though…..

Out of interest, how do you regard yoursef – Greek or American, or both?

My fiance is an Italian-Australian, but she is adamant she is really Italian! (even though she has never been to the old country!)

RE: Lets blame 11/9 for everyt

El Al is quite extreme. I wouldn’t advocate following their approach at all.

What annoys me is inconsistency and hypocrisy. The plastic/metal cuttlery is a case in point. They get unhappy if you try and bring a pair of nail clippers on board, then go and give you a metal knife or fork. Like I said, inconsistent.

    Basically, how about the following:

    1. Consistent policies

    2. Often, the stewardess opens the cockpit door inflight for whatever reason. I thought this was supposed to have stopped?

    3. More X-raying of hold baggage. I used to think this happened automatically, but twice in the last year I have been told by the check-in people to take my luggage across the hall to a security chap, who placed it in an X-ray machine and then put it into the baggage system after he’d checked it. I hardly ever see this happen, though. It must only be a random 0.5% of passengers or similar – how about 2 or 3% at random, instead?

    4. Install secondary x-rays/arches at the gate (in case you could get hold of something in the departure lounge)

    5. Widen the occurence of having your pic taken when you go into the departure lounge (and a barcode stuck to your boarding pass). I’ve only ever seen this in the UK (well, at MAN, LHR and LGW). This helps track passengers through the airport and also decreases the possibility of unaccompanies bags being flown, through error etc..

    6. An audit that security policies are being adhered to as part of an annual safety and security report to the CAA, FAA or whoever.

    7. CCTV in the cabin.

    8. CONSISTENCY

    9. I am not really an airline expert (just a hobby) but hopefully I’m an intelligent commerical person. The real experts should be consulted by all and every airlines. I know this happens, but the usual impression I get is that they advise the board, maybe hold a few training sessions…they don’t check for consistency and a security-focused mind set amongst ordinary staff.

Doesn’t Buzz (owned by KLM I think) operate internal low cost flights within France?

    RE: Move To Safeguard Regional

As part of the goverment’s planning, perhaps there should be a public service provision for BAA to make a certain number of slots available.

There ARE lots of unused slots at LHR, which were generated when airlines cut schedules after 11/9. Under the grandfather rights system, they are reserved for the historic operaters though, rather than available on the open market for somebody else to buy.

Basically though, certain sectors are inherently unprofitable. In such cases, if the link is vital, governments often offer subsidies. This, in my understanding, does not contravene EU subsidy rules. The UK govt does this to coach operators (National Express – approx. £500m last year) so why not an airline?

Another option would be to allow LCY to operate on Sundays. The 6 working day rule means LCY is not in the market for weekend breaks etc. from the islands.

    RE: Move To Safeguard Regional

    It’s a big problem.

At one stage, the Isle of Man government started litigation proceedings against BA for dropping the vital LHR link. Somehow it stalled quite early on though.

I think what is needed is INDEPENDENT airlines which have slots at LHR as part of their assets – ie. BAA (or whoever) would sell slots, in 10 year cycles or so, to small independent airlines if they satisfy BAA that they perform vital air links. There’s no reason why the costs of the slots could not be underwritten by the island governments.

The other problem though, is the price of tickets. Before BA bought out Manx Airlines, they used to regularly charge £300 rtn for a 50 minute flight in a crappy old 146-200 (G-MIMA). I only paid £75 to LGW on this aircraft last week, but it is excrutiatingly uncomfortable for even a short hop. I had a window seat and got off the aircraft with a sore neck from the fuselage curvature!

How about an IOM/CI joint airline – like Gulf Air? They could even hub at AMS or CDG.

    Strange isn’t it?

Not enough has been done to increase security in the US (and the actions taken are sometimes good, sometimes crass) yet they seem willing to go to this extreme for “security”

    Must be a NRA position!
