RE: When the Queen….
Such aircraft are not for use just by the Queen but by the Government as well.
There is a definite security angle to using a chartered plane for VIP transport. Why do you think other countries buy their own jets?
Besides, the cost is negligible in the scheme of things.
RE: QUIZ!!
Here goes…
1. I’d say Rolls Royce RB211, though I think one variant had Russky engines.
2. The Tu-154 is a smokey smelly noisy fu**er
3. Tu-144 Concordski?
4. 757 PF
5. Yak 40
6. Romania (Rombac)
7+ ???
RE: VS008 LAX – LHR
I once flew EWR-LHR with Virgin…
Was only travelling in Economy, but about 2 mins prior to push back a family trudged over to where I was sat – the check in people had issued two boarding passes for my seat! An embarrassed stewardess ushered me into Upper Class – now, I don’t mind mistakes like that!
RE: When the Queen….
Only in Britain would the “news” papers actually care about the cost of such things – ie. “Blair Force One” headlines. For a leading G7 country, we are a bit tight don’t you think?
RE: alt
Yes, but only on 747’s flying over high ground in my case. Absolutely stunning at dawn.
RE: Bizjets
You’d prefer a little 737 over a 747-400 ???
Being practical though (I doubt the BBJ is a practical “bizjet” for most users – more of a corporate shuttle, don’t you think?) the Gulfstream or maybe a Challenger to be a little different. The Dassault machines all seem a little ugly to my untutored eye!
RE: Airbus A319
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-04-02 AT 07:59 PM (GMT)]Back to the old point…the aircraft type is not relevant, it is the configuration the carrier chooses which affects comfort levels.
Kabir – what do you think of IA comfort over all?
RE: And what about this one ?
Never actually seen an IL-62, but I once saw a Tu-154 of Balkan at LHR – only the 3 engines, but incredibly noisy. Much more so than “noisy” jets like the 737-200 or 727.
Very unsightly yellow exhaust plumes on take off also. Is this generally a symptom of crap engines or is it just a sign of age?
RE: When the Queen….
I suspect the RAF will purchase some A340’s.
Although they are supposedly buying 767-336’s for tanker conversion I reckon they’d go for new build A340’s.
Not just for Royal use – the existing VC-10 / L-1011 fleet in use for VIP flights is decidedly creaky and ministers/the PM cannot go round leasing BA’s 777s whenever they need to go somewhere.
I’d put my money on A340-500s with BAE wings and RR engines.
One thing is certain – they are guaranteed to be Rolls Royce powered! (RR Conway on the VC10, RB211 on the L1011/767 or even 747-400s and Trent on the A340).
RE: Axis of What?
Very amusing – cheers!
Did you see the pictures of demonstrators in Cairo yesterday – calling Tony Blair Bush’s private bellydancer and lots of macho protestors belly dancing in jest?
RE: And what about this one ?
Only other one I can think of is the VC-10.
RE: Worst In-Flight Entertainment?
The controllers are usually a reversible game pad/phone which fits into one side of the arm rest. They are removible with a springy flex on them. All part of the ticket.
Usually on long haul scheduled flights you have an awful lot of choice becuase of market place competition between the airlines.
Eg. on LHR-JNB you can fly direct with BA, SAA and Virgin and if you connect -KLM, AF, LH, SAS, Alitalia, TAP, Iberia – need I go on?
That is not the case with most charter carriers (ie. your travel operator chooses the carrier, not you) hence the seeming lack of seat back TVs, headphones you have to buy etc.
RE: A310
767 may be bigger. But better????????
Isn’t that a bit like saying Cheddar is better than Gouda?
RE: 1st
No, 1st is not worth the cash at all!
25% more comfort for 100% more cost. Law of diminishing returns my friends.
RE: 1st
Anyone know any good ruses to get upgraded?
I’ve been lucky enough a few times but only ever when the airline has made a colossal ##### up – certainly not through any design of mine.
