    RE: Boeing 757

    Well, good luck Preston.

I still get confused when I think about how on earth I ended up as an accountant rather than a pilot (even though I love my profession). Don’t fall into the same trap though!

First is definitely an improvement over Business.

The fact that it costs proportionately more is not that relevant; most passengers simply want the extra comfort with cost a minor point.

So if the cost bothers you, then it is probably not the class for you.

    RE: Seats

BA usually have “wings” on the headrests these days for long haul flights. I quite like them – you can rest your head on them to get more positions to sit in. They also often have movable footrests – again, it means you can alter position and posture, making the journey a bit less tiring.

    They make you buy headphones??????

That is absolutely apalling. I have always had them free. Do many airlines do this??

Certainly all the carriers I have used over the last year have given them away – BA, Air France, KLM, SAA, Virgin.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-04-02 AT 12:39 PM (GMT)]Well BA just sent me a standard letter stating that I would need to have an IQ of 200, Get a double first from Cambridge and make the SAS look silly over an assault course. Easy!!

But British Midland and Virgin (BM esp) were incredibly nice and helpful. BM even got a trainee pilot to call me up and talk it over.

And I was only about 15 at the time!

Oh – I also wrote to Air Atlantique/Atlantic Airways.

Their chief pilot offered me a DC-3 jump seat ride and a chat about training.

I don’t think this would be possible post 9/11 ?

    RE: Boeing 757

A decade or so ago, I decided I was going to be a pilot (so I ended up as an accountant!)

I wrote off to a bunch of airlines asking for a twirl on their simulators. Most said no, but a very charming gent from Monarch Airlines (I think he was either their chief pilot or chief training pilot) invited me down to Luton.

I spent an afternoon on their 757-200 simulator. It was an absolute pleasure to fly, not actually that sluggish. Night time approaches to LAX past the “Hollywood” sign. Great!

I only add this as a belated thanks to a warm and friendly airline training department!

They give you a good range of films, documentaries and news programmes to watch through about 15 or so channels on the seat back TV’s. So do Virgin, although theirs often don’t work very well for some reason. The best economy class IFE in recent years is South African, in my opinion.

A few months ago, I played multi-player chess on the seatback TV with my neighbour – a nice touch. Eliminates the need to bring a GameBoy in long flights.

Everyone expects Singapore, Emirates, Gulf Air etc.. to be top notch (which they are) but SAA was a nice surprise.

What I like these days is that even on short haul flights, the A320’s and NG 737’s often have drop-down flat screens every few rows. Some airlines display mind teasers (like the ones you get in the cinema before the trailers start). Don’t know how many carriers do this, as I’ve only encountered SAA and Gulf Air flights like this. The others (eg. BA, BMI) just seem to use the screens for safety demos.

Oh – SAA (and SIA’s Krisworld I think) both have audio and video on demand – just choose the film you want and the server spins the discs up for you.

    RE: A310

I don’t think the comfort level has anything to do with the type of aircraft. 15 year old A310 = same comfort as 15 year old 767 I’d say.

It has more to do with the airline and the class.

I only flew A310 once, with KLM in the late 80’s. But that was straight from a MEA Boeing 720 and it seemed heavenly by comparison!

    Generally a 757 with L-1011 second.

But any aircraft if it is in First class!

    Don’t be so gloomy.

Iraq will not act against Israel.

The consequences are chilling; Saddam is holding onto power right now but a concerted US/Israeli attack would finish him.
