RE: Bad news for Coca Cola drinkers
What next – in flight McDonalds?
RE: What’s your favourite Tri-jet?
Tristar, no argument. 727 was too noisy and often tatty in my experience, Trident was a commercial flop, DC-10 was ubiquitous and initially had a suspect safety record although I would have no concerns about flying on one now. The MD-11 was a waste of McD’s money and time to develop.
RE: Greatest Airlines of the World
In terms of “greatest” as opposed to “best” the winner for me, is British Airways.
1. The other Euro carriers have had too much government help.
2. The US carriers are too US-centric.
3. SIA is fantastic but lacks global reach.
4. Qantas ditto.
5. Aeroflot has traditionally been a very poor airline.
BA has great global connections and First and Biz classes are extremely good. It also flies Concorde!
RE: Funny screen savers
Sorry Ja, I thought you were being sarcastic – “funny” and “Lufthansa”.
RE: Funny screen savers
Hey – hope there are no Germans on this forum!
I wonder why you think Germans have no sense of humour??
RE: BC-17X
Well, if the US gov’t wants the ability to requisition the aircraft from FedEx, then presumably they will pay half the cost?
That might sweeten the pot a bit for FedEx.
RE: Pah, who needs Low Cost carriers anyway?!?!?
I guess most people would choose “full service” carriers over the low cost airlines if the price was roughly similar.
The drawbacks of low cost airlines are infuriating! They drop you off in a field 50 miles from the city you are trying to get to; if their services are cancelled they’ll put you on the next one – but go and find a park bench in the mean time! And the unallocated seating policies just seems silly.
As long as you can avoid the taking-the-piss type of fares which the big carriers still charge if they can get away with it (or charging £500 for a biz class ticket even though the seats are the same as economy!). I’d personally stick with the devil I know best!
RE: How many have gone?
Let’s not forget Swissair
Also, British World – though not sure if that was linked with 9/11.
Gill Airways also in the UK bit the dust.
Manx Airlines was grounded for over a week following cancellation of insurance; the UK gov’t eventually agreed to become insurer of last resort (as with every other UK carrier) and they then took the skies again.
RE: Airport pic of the day 20/03
Sorry V1, the others got it. Lusaka, Zambia.
RE: Airport pic of the day 20/03
The green flag is the national flag.
RE: New Virgin Atlanic routes
Agreed, they’ll do their best to create synergies.
But that will only be incidental to the Aussie routes, not a reason for them.
RE: Pic from Down Under 21/03/02
I always thought “longreach” meant they had a long range…
But apparently, the town of Longreach is where Qantas started up in the bad old days!
RE: New Virgin Atlanic routes
I’m not so sure.
Virgin atlantic and Virgin blue are segmentally positioned quite differently.
The business models of each seem fairly different to me.
RE: $1 million dollars
“My client is a cyborg not a terrorist”
Good grief!
I’m not a legal eagle, but it seems to me that airlines reserve the right not to carry somebody. If they insist on conditions in order to carry somebody, that is their right. The Prof. could have walked out of the search whenever he wanted…as long as he understood he would not be boarding the flight.
It also goes without saying that airlines are allowed to take “reasonable” steps to ensure safety.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-03-02 AT 10:22 PM (GMT)]Right continent…wrong country. Good effort though!
Give you a clue…check out the flag.
