    RE: Saab 340

Yes, quite likely that the B version rectified this fault I suppose.

Spooky…with the thread on Cubana’s safety we were all aware of the shortcomings of Cuban airlines.

    RE: Saab 340

A few months ago I was flying MAN-IOM in an ATP of Manx Airlines. One of the articlesin the inflight rag concerned the aircraft which Manx operated in the early 90’s.

One such aircraft was the SF340 (A or B, not sure)

Apparently, this particular a/c (its a small airline!) was very unreliable, which led to replacement with a J41.

The main problem was that a lot of the wiring was TOO neat and when the wing flexed inflight, the wires inside the wing box would crack!

    The article blamed Fairchild.

    RE: Regional Airports

No, I wouldn’t laugh at a small airport. Size doesn’t count – it’s what you do with it (or so I’m told!!)

Hmmph – I’ll have you know, I have a degree and am not far off being a chartered certified accountant!

No hard feelings – at least I learned something new!

    RE: Regional Airports

I used to live near Humberside airport…

That was truly dead. When I lived there, Air UK flew twice a day to AMS using F27’s.

Sometimes in the UK, authorities build regional airports in the middle of nowhere then get upset when no one uses them! Does the same thing happen elsewhere, anyone know?

    RE: VC10 OR 707

    Come onnnn!!!!!

You cannot say the VC10 is more efficient than the 707 just because it had higher load factors (incidentally, where did you find that information?)

Load factors are a function of economic circumstances and marketing as well as a host of other socio-economic factors. They have precisely nothing to do with whether the airline flys VC10s or 707s.

I believe the 707 was designed from the outset with fuel economy slightly more highly placed than with the VC10 – though they were both poor by modern standards. The VC10 was designed more around the specific needs of BOAC – especially the colonial runs.

    RE: VC10 OR 707

    Hey!

You just argued my own point but started off with suggesting I do more research!

I never said the 707 was not more efficient; I said the other posters were not comparing like with like.

Yes – the 707 was a fine aircraft which won lots of order on its merits. But the complete lop-sided nature of the competition owed a lot to US protectionism, also.

All quite logical after a fashion!

Interesting about the Polish – its a language I think most non-speakers struggle with. I never got the hang of Lek Walesa (spelling???) the old Solidarity leader from the Gdansk area.

    Any idea of the location?

My gut reaction is Russia for obvious reasons but it’s not a part of the world I know much about.

    RE: Stansted-Bradley (Connecticut)

ICI always used to use charter aircraft for their communications.

I can remember King Airs at Teesside very often, and the occassional BAE 125. I’d be surprised if there is still much activity as their Billingham plant has been downsized for a couple of years now.

No, such errors should not occur. But they do!

    RE: Manx Airlines

No, like I said this was a number of years ago (early or mid 90s) so I don’t know if the service to Le Toquet is still running or not.
