Sorry to be morbid, but I agree with Sauron. As much as I am very much personally aghast at certain features of American life, it’s their life and not mine. It starts to get out of hand when the US exercise such utter dominance in the world, and their culture leeches out globally. Like I said, I don’t like a lot of their culture, though I do admire the majority of it.
The trigger happy gun-owning mentality is what gets to me personally. Israeli and Irish lap dogging is the other.
But, and Geforce will be down my throat for saying this, overall I have more time for the US than for Europe. I see eye to eye with Americans on most issues, apart from the exception above. Not so with my continental neighbours, who have this all encompassing love of the antithesis of democracy and freedom: the EU.
I guess I am at heart an Atlanticist and not a European. What you need to ask, is how many other Brits feel the same? In my opinion, a simple majority.

I don’t blame the US, but I do blame the UN.
There’s a Discovery programme on tomorrow about the Rwanda genocide, featuring an interview with the commander of the UN peacekeepers there. Let’s see how that particular debacle is explained away!

Yeah, I have one. I just prefer bags is all.

At the risk of upsetting the BCal fan club, what was so great about it?
They seemed to fly most of their long haul flights from London, not Scotland.
I came across them in a hotel room in New York, about 8 years ago. Tesco used to sell them, but they seem to have stopped.
I tried a Google search, but to no avail. “Coffee Bag” only got me empty bags for retailers to put their own coffee into.
Trust me, they are far more civilised than instant coffee!

I guess we have a different attitude to grandiose names GD! I’d prefer it to be named after its actual locations (like Heathrow village).
The Battle of Trafalgar was a naval success against Napoleon, won (I think) by Admiral Nelson.
Well as long as they don’t go all immodest and start calling it “London Churchill International” or “London Trafalgar” or something, I’m happy! Keep the Blairster away from this!
Kudos, Snapper. I’ve wanted to visit there for ages.
By the way, the passport angle is easy. I, ahem, “lost” my passport a few years ago, so I got a replacement. I now have two, so no worries over where I can and can’t visit.

I agree with Saab.
However, tricky ricky might re-adopt the slogan for PR purposes, even if Virgin don’t really believe it. That is certainly what happened with “4 engines 4 long haul”.
Correct, the airlines are in love with LHR.
But…why?
I would volunteer that it is the sheer magnitude of the airport, the number of airlines, the number of destinations…great for connecting pax, and handily a few miles away from one of the World’s main cities.
Trouble is….it is shocking. Infrastructure is appalling, whole thing is badly planned.
Ideally, we would knock LHR down and build LHR2.
