Spotting Spot 1-Approx Distance from Terminal=2.4Miles
As you can tell by the distance, a taxi might be an easier option. You can reach the same spot by taxi by using the yellow road instead, that also leads to the same spot. This spot is a field situated at the bottom of RWY23, and police hardly seem to bother people here.
What this spot is best for: Best for RWY23 arrivals. Can also be used if aircraft are taking off on RWY05, but it’s best to go somewhere else if they are on RWY05 (to be included later). The aircraft fly over quite low here, and it’s as close as you’ll get to the planes if they are on 23.
How to get here: As can be seen on the map, take a right turn out of the terminal and head down the mian road. When you reach the first roundabout take care as it’s a very large one, and head for the road that’s signposted as taking yo to ‘Takeley’. Once on this road, go left and head along the road I have highlighted on the map. After a while you should be surrounded by wooded areas on either side of you, and just after you exit this area there will be a footpath to your left. Walk down this footpath into the field marked as spot 1!
Right here goes! I’m going to remember this thread so if anyone asks in the future, I can pull it up and show them! As most of you know, I’m just 3 miles from the Stansted runway and so I know the airport pretty much off the back of my hand. So class, pay attention! 😉 One thing to remember, the police and security here are particularly strict, and if you’re not careful you may find yourself in our local prison for a bit (which according to my cousins isn’t very nice!:p ) There is nowhere easy to spot at STN, as they either require a long walk or risk getting dragged away by security. The main problem is that most of the spotting areas are on the North side of the airport, yet the terminal is on the South side.
So, you’re in for a trek! Depending on how fast you can walk is another thing, but you’re looking at maybe an hour in each direction to and from the spotting areas (it’s ok for me, I just jump on my bike and ride there from my house! 😀 ) All of the roads to get to the spotting areas are also quite busy and fast, so you gotta be careful. I’ve made some scans below. Sorry about them being a bit blurred. It also depends on what runway the planes are on where you need to go, so you’ll have to check before hand (drop me a note, i can tell ya straight away by looking out the window!) Coming up in the next post will be info on the certain spotting areas, so please bare with me…..
I would be extremely pleased if they started manufacturing aircraft again! It’d be brilliant to have atleast some part in the aviation industry here in Britain, compared to what we had years back. I think it was quite a bad decision to stop the RJX development right at the last minute, I think they could have made some good money on that project had they given it chance.

Yes I totally agree! I’ve been with this forum for a little over 6 months, and in just that time I’ve noticed the huge decline in the maturity, quality and just the general standards on this forum. There are some great people on here that have very professional and informative views, and I feel that with this decline we’re going to slowly lose them (looks like Saab 2000 has been the latest to disappear  ). We’ve also lost the likes of A330Crazy because of all this .Lets just pick up where we seem to have made our mistakes, and carry on how this forum should be.
Brilliant Photos Ren! All very good, but the touch-down shot is particularly great! 😀
Brilliant shots, love that first Gulf Air one! How did you get the shot of that Etihad plane, and where did you take it from?
The sun is a problem when you’re trying to take pictures if it’s facing you. Not only can it bugger up your camera, it lights up the wrong side of the aircraft that you need to be taking a picture of! Therefore it’s nearly impossible to get a good shot!
Phew! Can I have a go?! I wonder what affect it might have on……Brenmc  Lemmie have a go!
