Nice work Adam.
Great shots Adam. Is the spot you took them from easy to get to on foot from T1/2/3? I need to spend a day there!
Paul
Very. Just jump on the (free) 285 bus from the central bus staton to Hatton Cross tube station. From there, cross a road and you are at the petrol station underneath the approach. 2 mins further round will bring you to Myrtle Avenue for the side-on arrivals.
I Have The Flight Number Its TOM2723 What aircraft is it ?
Why are you asking that when you’ve just been told?
For those in the London area, DUS is £52 return for a daytrip on Air Berlin from STN. If you were to stay over the night, you’d be able to get a £1 fare each way which means it’s a total of £40.
My dilemma is this:
-I can’t do Thursdays or Saturdays in the Summer because of work.
-I can’t do any time in July
-In August I’m limited to 1st-6th and then 16th-19th and 29th-30th (all due to other commitments, or other trips that are boked).
So if anyone fancies looking at a calendar and seeing if there is a way around, then they’re welcome!
would like to discuss the faces of the pilots, they look worried
So would you, if someone looking like Lance was watching and pointing things at you! 😀
Before the poll was posted I was certain I would vote for a seperate sub forum.
Instead I voted to allow each member to have a “photo diary” thread, which sounds like a good idea as a show case of each member’s work.
I respect that point, but think of the loading tmes. There are a number of threads on the forum where people come back to post on (remember the old models thread, that was started by Allen a year or two ago) and whilst I found it interesting for the first few weeks, I then refused to look at it because of the time it took to load the shots. Everytime I scrolled up the page to the latest posts, the page would carry on jumping down as older photos were gradually loaded in the thread. I think this makes sense, I’m not sure if anyone else knows what I mean?! If photographers were to have a ‘diary’ thread, it would soon build up to several pages long, and people would be put off clicking on it, because of the frustration of waititng for all the previous photos to load aswell.
IMO, there is a solution based on this idea though. A weekly photo diary per photographer. It doesn’t have to be strictly controlled as in “right, delete his new thread, it’s onlys 6 days since his last!” but just in general. The photographers should go back to their old thread if they’ve already posted photos that week. That way, it’s gonna get a couple of pages long at the most, which is fine with a majority of people being on broadband. And then once it’s been approximately a week since their last, they’re free to post a new thread. I’d say there were maybe 10 consistent phootgraphers on here, which is only 10 threads per week. And then I’d say there’s maybe 10 other photographers who post when they can, and they’d still get a fair chance to have their photos viewed as much, whereas they wouldn’t get that chance in a sub forum.
Even if 30 photographers turned up one week, that’s only like 5 or 6 threads per day! That means there’s no chance of any discussion threads of interest being pushed off the front page.
Ah yes, I saw an ISO sign coming up on the screen yesterday and wondered what it was about.
As for shutter speeds, I’m not really sure if I can change it or not. I probably can, but I have to change it via a scene mode (you see my cam’s not very advanced).
And aperture, hmm. I’ll see if I can find something on that, whatever it is.
Thanks. 🙂
Put simply, the aperture is how wide the opening is when the camera takes the photo. A narrower aperture (confusingly, a higher f number!) gives you a greater depth-of-field. So a narrow aperture such as f10 will mean that the whole plane, from back-to-front, is in focus (say for example that it was flying towards you). A wider aperture such as f6.3 will mean that maybe just the front of the plane is in focus, and that he rear is blurred out of focus.
If anything, I’d say that cars are more difficult. They may be moving slower than a plane taking off, but they are smaller, and you’re standing closer to them. This will make them move through the frame faster.
Have a look through your camera’s handbook, or if you’ve already found it yourself, to see if there’s a manual shooting mode. If you can find one, then try setting the shutter speed above 1/200 (I actually like to take my photos at lower speeds for various reasons, but when you’re starting up, you should want a shutter at 1/200 or higher to stop the blur). See if you can also set the ISO to 200 in good lighting, 400 if it’s not too sunny. I wouldn’t even bother if your ISO is going above 400. Set the aperture around f8-11 to keep the plane in focus from back-to-front (especially if you’re taking the shot with the plane coming towards, or going away from you).
That’s a very standard set-up, and is obviously not going to work for every photo. But in general, you should be able to practise quite well at those settings.

Great work! What lense are you using?
Well not all E+ seats are pre-allocated, so worth asking at checkin. I think, if I had evidence I was originally in E+ (i.e a printout with seat allocations), if they couldn’t put me back in E+ at checkin I’d have a little to say to them – politely – about how if they’d taken E+ from me and it wasn’t available now, I’d be happy to accept business class instead 😉
Andy
Ahah, I’ll have to try it. Cheers Andy 😎
And did anyone like the look of that livery on the Dash?
United call it Economy Plus. Its not really a premium economy in the same sense as BA or Virgin – it the same service as in standard economy, just extra leg room. United Economy Plus is free for their frequent flyers with status (and to other Star Alliance silver/gold card holders). If you qualify for E+ on LAX-IAD due to frequent flyer status, you qualify for it on all your forthcoming flights. I recommend you call United and get seats in E+ allocated in advance – well worth it as it makes a big difference to comfort (if not to service). They do not, however, pre-allocate all E+ seats and may have allocated all they can in advance – in this case ask for E+ seats on your other flights when you check in. E+ is one of the main reasons I like UA – guaranteed extra leg room for no extra money. Well, that and channel 9 of course! 😉
Andy
We were originally E+ on all 5 flights. However, since about 7 months ago, our flight numbers and times have been rescheduled 2 or 3 times. As we have been booked onto new flights, they must have got fuller and so we have slowly lost all of our E+ seats, as they must have already been reserved! By the time our flights were finally confirmed, the only E+ seats we had left were on that single leg
No meals on domestic UA flights – just buy-on-board snack boxes that don’t contain anything that is remotely healthy (but then, you are in the USA!). Booze is also buy-on-board, soft drinks and hot drinks complimentary.
Andy
PS: Check out channel 9 on the IFE – should be available on all equipment except RJs but occasionally its switched off
Cheers Andy. No different than AA then. We’re actually in Premium Economy for LAX-IAD due to being in the frequent flyer pogramme. I wonder whether they’ll feed us for free in there?
Thanks T5 and Elgan. Anyone know the situation with domestic service these days?
Robert, did you come around the perimeter at all? I did see two guys with DSLR’s, one carrying L-glass.
