HNL is a great airport for spotting, landside. Mostly 767’s nowadays as all the US carriers use those into HNL. About 10 years ago, nothing but trijets and 747 classics. You still see the occassional NW DC-10, however. What hotel are you staying at?

Queen Kapiloani, right near the foothills of Diamond Head (the quieter end of Waikiki). So would you recommend that when I fly home, I spend as much time as possible landside before going through departures? Or are there other good spots airside too?

Hmm, very strange. Seeing as they’re already receiving 3-5 new 738’s each month. We have loads of FR pilots living on our road, and 3 live oppopsite us. If I see them, I’ll ask them if they know any reasoning behind it.

Don’t worry im permanantly confused  .Sadly not much gets airbourne by the time that get to that spot, its just down to luck. Anything landing is easily graphable. It’s just very muddy at the moment and being south facing would not be much good in the sun. Something that I did not see today. 🙁 . But was a good day out . 37 RYR’s in 3 hours and in the mid afternoon lul.
Also looks like G-IGOZ 737 won’t be around much longer as it arrived in full Corendon.com scheme complete with Turkish flag and tape on G-.

Your best bet on a sunny day, is to head to the same spot later on in the afternoon (in the Summer). A good friend of mine discovered it was possible, with shots like this http://www.airliners.net/open.file/602629/L/

Did you get a shot of IGOZ? Any sighting of the Cable and Wireless FR?

It was on the northside and you do need a car. From the old terminal entrance turn right and follow the road through the village and then after a mile you will see loads of cars parked on the right. From here you are opposite cargo and can see all movements. Police dont seem to mind everybody parking on the road.

Ah sorry I was under the impression they were on RWY23 today, that’s why I was confused. I know where you were, I’ve never really tried that spot when they’re on 05. I’ve been there whilst on 23 and it’s useless, because the ground between where you stand and the runway is raised.

    You don’t need a car, it’s what I got my bike for! :p 😉

Nice ones there. Where’d you go for the STN shots? It looks like somewhere along the South side near to the ex-FLS hangar. Did you have a car with you?

It was definitely well written, must have been a very talented journalist. But I seem to rememeber more quotes about how many spots you had on your face, or information about the suit you were wearing! :p

Martin, I saw you in The Times feature from last week, looking very cool sat on the step of one of the aircraft! Nice article…although they seemed more interested in what you looked like, rather than the actual airline!

They hand out Leis at the airport now?? When I flew there a couple of years ago we had to specially order them through the travel agent…we could be met by girls with these flowers for an extra 20 dollars or something…
20 dollars is alot of beers….so no flowers for us…oh well!!

Hawaii is a GREAT place….have fun!! Are you staying in Oahu or moving on to other islands??

We’re staying on Oahu. Not there long enough, and don’t have enough money to explore the other islands. Although we are looking to explore the whole of Oahu. This includes Pearl Harbour, surfing on the Northern Shores, and taking the walk right to the top of Diamond Head. Make the most of it while we’re there!

Thanks to everyone else, I’m sure I shall have a nice trip report to reward you with 😀
