[QUOTE=Creaking Door;2164659]How so? I can’t think of any reason that full-auto capability would result in fewer casualties?
Presumably he is referring to the fact that automatic weapons are designed to have a degree of inaccuracy built in to get a spread of shot on the battlefield whereas a rifle or a weapon on single shot is aimed at a specific target and therefore more likely to score a hit.
Sorry, typo on my part, I meant bipod. As I said just passing on what I saw and found interesting.
That incident you describe could have been disastrous!! Good job No. 2 was alert. Was there any action taken afterwards?
Any truth in the story that the smaller calibre rounds are intended to wound more than kill? The idea being, I was once told that 1 man dead = 1 man out of the unit/patrol/skirmish whereas 1 man wounded = 3+ men out of the unit/patrol/skirmish or patrol abandoned etc. due to getting the wounded man back plus using up enemy transport and medical resources. Is this based on fact or just popular myth?
Precisely what they were saying in the documentary I was referring too. Some weapons need to be accurate, some need to spread the shot or projectiles. The Bren was very accurate and although it could be turned/moved around by the operator this required time/effort etc. depending on position and circumstances when the same could be achieved by having a less accurate weapon. It changed the thinking of always trying to produce accurate weapons to actually designing some being less accurate and actually providing an advantage. I found it interesting as I had never heard of this before, it may be cr@p but I could see the logic. I have no experience of firing/operating these things so obviously value the opinions of John Green and others who have first hand experience.
Re 9
No, and you can’t ‘polish a turd’ either.
But you can roll in in glitter!:D
Absolutely agree he deserves a mention. My wife and her father were big fans of his and we saw him in concert 3 times and he was brilliant. R.I.P. Donny (my wife’s name for him).
“Nice to seizure, to seizure nice..”
Didn’t he die well!
Coat on.
Well put trumper (#445). I went to see it with Mrs sgt.austin on Saturday night. Me, the enthusiast with some knowledge of what happened found it enjoyable to watch and well made (except the burning Spitfire mock-up at the end!!) but disappointing in that , for me it didn’t portray the whole story of the events as well as I was expecting and felt let down by the lack of plot/storyline. Mrs sgt.austin, the ordinary person with little knowledge of the events, found it incredibly exciting but also incredibly moving. At one point, she was close to tears as the ship was sinking and all the young lads were struggling to get out, some drowning, some burning etc. and those that managed to survive only to be shot at/bombed again. She said that for the first time she understood the horrors of what these young chaps went through and why I get so passionate about remembrance day etc. Don’t get me wrong, she has always been respectful of our veterans and has taken part in remembrance services but this really moved her. She asked what would have happened to the pilot stood on the beach at the end. When I told her that he would probably have been taken prisoner and kept locked up for the next five years if he was lucky enough to survive she was stunned. She couldn’t get over the terrible waste of the young lives.
My son saw it with friends a week earlier. He had some knowledge of the events but also found it an incredible story and enjoyed the fast moving pace and action.
If the film has the same effect on other ordinary filmgoers as it did my wife and son then it has been worthwhile and for me done it’s job and my disappointment doesn’t matter.
Going off topic a bit (sorry folks!), my son is a second year apprentice at Leonardo Helicopters – Westland’s to just about everyone in aviation circles as I’m sure you all know. He has been selected to be on their publicity stand in the ‘Techzone’ in the show from today for the rest of the weekend, talking to the public about his job and the training and opportunities the company provides. If you are there and see their stand please drop in and say hello, his name is Jack. He is doing an electrical/electronics apprenticeship and currently his job is wiring and fitting out Wildcat cockpits. Lucky git is being put up in a hotel and being paid to be there. Ok, he won’t get to see it all but he will see more than I will (can’t go this year).
For those that didn’t see the news the petition was delivered to Downing Street yesterday. 250000 signatures apparently so if nothing else comes of it, it has at least raised a bit of awareness.
That is usually what an OBE is awarded for, hence the nickname for it Other Bu@@ers Efforts. My current boss has just received it as did my previous boss. MBE is for something specific an individual has done – My Bloody Efforts. A chap I used to work with got it for his work with the boy scout movement. Knighthoods usually for a multitude of things through a lifetime. Not hard and fast rules though.
I totally agree, but a person still has to be nominated for it, they don’t troll through the populace looking for deserving cases.
That is contrary to what we were told by the Cabinet Office Press/PR department.
Also, 4 refers:-
Hi Andy. Well as you say it does seem contrary because if you go directly to the nomination form it just says there is no needto select the honour as the appropriate one will be selected by the committee. It doesn’t say you can’t suggest one, nor does it say nominations stating an award will be disregarded. Anyway, all this is really irrelevant to the purpose of the thread. I put it up to make people who hadn’t heard aware of it and hopefully add signatures to the petition, I don’t care what the system is, I don’t believe adding to the petition will harm his chances. I believe he is deserving of the award – any award – and hope the campaign is a success.
I agree though that these campaigns can make it a bit uncomfortable for people. I think it is disappointing that people (Ms Vorderman, people at The Sun etc.) felt that this is what it would need to make it happen as it should have happened anyway. I think it still causes discomfort among the hierarchy, be it royalty or government, when it comes to honouring anyone from bomber command. Just my thoughts.
Hi Tangmere. I just had a look at the ten page nomination form and accompanying guidance letter. The letter states that you don’t have to or need to specify the type of award but there is nothing to stop you if you wish to do so. Just for info.
I have no idea how the system works but apparently it was a similar campaign and petition that helped get Bruce Forsyth his knighthood. I’m just making people aware of it. Apparently there are already over 150000 signatures in just 48 hours.
