We tried having a bit of a root around the scrappers and farms in the Byley/Cranage area but found nothing Manchester related (or Wellington for that matter). I would imagine that we are not the first to try or last to think of it either, but if any Manchester Vulture bits were to turn up, surely it would be there?

Parked the trusty Aprilia on the footpath on the A57 bridge, in between a Vincent Comet and a Panther. The Spit and Hurri pilots seemed to be having way too much fun to be getting paid for what they do and the uphill pass from the Lancs was a fantastic surprise. What was a great treat was that the traffic chaos that you car drivers endured getting out meant that us hooligans had the Snake to ourselves on the way back to Manchester. By 5.30 I had got to Glossop, realised that we still had a beautiful afternoon in front of us and headed back out to the tea van at Holme Moor to watch the Paragliders

Quote...”“……….. approximately 500 cars to be accommodated in our car parks and we’ve also organised additional spaces for a few hundred cars on the roadside………”

I wonder if that will be enough spaces ?

    Not a hope in hell!

I’m taking the motorbike, it’s sneaky parking chancer time…

Is it the Kalgoorlie Biplane? I was only reading about it last week. The ‘right lines’ being that it was based on a De Havilland design?

Indeed the good Mamcumians did (correct spelling btw!) achieve what Boney failed to and forced Wellington to retreat. It was a well earned reward for his involvement in the Peterloo massacre 11 years before. Coincidentally, the place where NR intend to bulldoze is the very spot at which the loving crowd assembled to ballistically offer the gifts of rotting vegetables and a rich and varied selection of local building materials to the Duke. This was one of the reasons why Manchester maintained a Yeomanry for far longer than most British cities, we were far too good at civil disobedience for comfort.

The Manchester Museum at the university is brilliant if you choose something without an aviation aspect, as is the People’s History Museum. MOSI is looking a little tired nowadays, they are losing public support hand over fist due to some really aggressive ‘Chugging’ when you enter. The Hunter and the Spit have been reclamed by the RAFM, yet the Tornado and the Provost that are in the collection (together with all of the 146/RJ and 748/ATP stuff) remain in storage. The volunteers at the museum do a fantastic job, the Shackleton is a joy to behold if you can get the unofficial tour, but it feels like they are there to make the place a pretty backdrop to conferences and weddings. Most of the full time conservators have been made redundant, everyone else is employed in revenue generation rather than education and preservation.
There is also a lot of bitterness locally over their u-turn regarding the objections to the ‘Ordsall Chord’. If you don’t know about this, it is worth having a look in to! In a nutshell, Notwork Rail are going to sever the railway connection in to the museum and cut the available running line by two thirds. This new line that they are building is going to take advantage of an oversight in the listing of the buildings at the museum and go straight through the middle of the Station approach, severing the Grade 1 listed station from the grade 1 listed viaduct. This is the oldest intercity railway station in the world, for god’s sake. There are very few places in the world where you can stand on a spot and say ‘This is where it all began’, but this was the absolute epicentre of the public transport revolution. It would be akin to turning the meadows at Kittyhawk in to a carpark and flattening the dunes to get a better sea view! MOSI were vehemently opposed to this scheme right up until the NR chequebook came out. Now it is down to a handful of us local history buffs to support English Heritage.
If you get a chance, the Anson museum http://www.enginemuseum.org/ is well worth a visit.

The Mersey runs through Liverpool because if it were to walk, it would get robbed at knifepoint.

It is a PBY6 Canso turret, I think? Mike has convinced himself that he is wrong despite being right from what I can see!

Crikey, one that I know again? It’s a Burnelli of one flavour or another. I think it may be the UB20? This was an advertising stunt for Sun Oil, air to air below.

Watched the first few minutes, saw stock footage of a B17 waist gunner whilst the narrative was about the perils of being a Lancaster gunner, turned off.
