I am glad his enthusiasm has been rewarded – OK the Vulcan was a step too far but at least he has saved 1 airframe (and got some positive publicity!)
Is the structure on the right to test the suitability of Spitfires for use on CAM ships?
For what reason (assuming no connection with the Olympic bid news)?
In view of the fact that they circled Stratford, the proposed Olympic site, in V formation suggests a strong connection 🙂
Monday, so you might have a long wait!
Especially since the National News this lunchtime said she is grounded!
Release mechanism from the Mayo Composite?
This is on my desk and used as a paperweight.
It is made of brass and is thought to be from around the war period. It has been in the family for many years.
I know nothing else about it but was struck by the similarity of the cockpit shape.

I would have thought that a list of the IWM collection would be useful to non-enthusiasts visiting Duxford.
This would be a fairly static list and not expensive in time or money to update.
There is a definite problem for the IWM advertising aircraft that they do not own and may be flying elsewhere.
Even without the ‘live’ aircraft, Duxford is an amazing place and well worth a visit. If you include a link to the excellent site Duxford Update this includes the live aircraft.
I think Jonathan this is a case where if you had done it the ‘enthusiasts’ wouldn’t have noticed but the general visitor would appreciate it.
Simple for me – anyone who keeps a historic aircraft in a flying or potentially flying state.
Those that don’t fly are projects for the future, and those that do provide joy and a sense of rememberence for those that are fortunate enough to witness them flying.
Even if those that fly are not displayed as and when we would like they are still preserved. A reclusive aircraft is better than a pile of tin cans on a supermarket shelf in my opinion.
I would like to see Southern Cross over here but following the comments on the forum regarding numbers of propellors I guess that is highly unlikely.
North Notts isn’t Chesterfield. I’ve been here for 18 years and it’s a long way from everywhere! Straight up or down the M1 is fine but anything else means cross-country. Duxford on a very good day is an hour and fifty minutes, Old Warden about the same. East Coast main line is Newark, Retford or Doncaster, all getting on for an hour away. West is worse, the Pennines are in the way.
Thanks for the replies,
It used to take me an hour and thirty minutes to commute 25 miles in London so I am beginning to get used to being able to travel greater distances.
Doncaster Aeroventure,Elvington,East Kirkby, Coningsby and Manchester Air & Space are all places I have yet to visit so there is a fair amount to get started on.
I am hoping to finish the initial work on the new house by the summer so knowing good watering holes in the area will be useful.
Dave
Well done.
Moggy have you got the – Oh no – I see – sorry
So, it seems that now I and my fellow countrymen have to take credit for this mess too, along with the Iran war.
Do you know something we don’t yet? We are aware of the Iraq war over here in the UK. Is there one going on next door too?
Michigan – is that near Edinburgh or is it in Ireland?
Thank-you for the explanation. The concept of thumbnails to open is a good idea.
