    Dave,

Good to hear she’s in good hands! Sounds like the glider is caseine glued and has been damp somewhere in its history? If so: good luck. You have a lot of work ahead of you… Are you intending to restore the Kite to flying condition?

Nice to see one of the old Slingsby’s safe, by the way. We’ve collected quite a few ourselves with a small group of people. After a Type 30A Prefect and a Type 38 Grasshopper, our current project is a Type 34A Sky. The Sky is expected to join the other time in the air this September. Next project will be a Type 21B Sedbergh.

    Kind regards,

    Eric

There’s a lovely book on Slingsby sailplanes, although somewhat hard to get hold of: Slingsby Sailplanes, by Martin Simons. It has 8 pages on the Kite, including design, production, histories of all the Kites, anecdotes, performance and photos (among which a nice shot of said Kite from the Wills collection). The prototype, it says, still exists at Dunstable in poor condition.

As a matter of interest, I happen to own a 1951 Slingsby T.38 Grasshopper TX.1 with a bunch of people in The Netherlands. We fly it on a regular basis. It’s painted in its original Air Cadets c/s, down to the last details. Lovely glider. We do aerotows, winch launching, car tows and bungee. Every flights an adventure. And usually the landing is actually on the airfield 😉

Would anyone out there have any pictures or tales of Grasshopper WZ795? We would love to have them for the history of our aircraft…

PS: there’s also a nice 1951 Slingsby T.34 Sky and a SLingsby T.30A Prefect to fly when winds are too high for the ‘Hopper…

    DUtch website

As for the original photo appearing on the website mentioned above in Holland, yes, this is the friend looking for the ID of this aircraft. The reason there’s no additional details mentioned in that link, is that he doesn’t have any and is looking for them.

The Schiphol mentioned in this link (in the DUtch texet) is NOT the place the picture is supposed to be taken, and the 1946 is NOT where it is supposed to have been. The caption simply says that the photo came from a collection of photos regarding Schiphol airport, with A POSSIBILITY it was taken at Schiphol too. And it COULD have been 1946. But could, as has been pointed out, have been later judging by the colourscheme.
