It was a bad day for gliding. Matt Wright lost his life too that day, at Brentor in a launching accident. His excellent videos on YouTube (under the name Balleka) are a tribute to his passion for gliding…

Breaking and entering. The storage site of the Brussels museum, in process of being moved.

Cessna 310s, Argus, Auster, Stampes. And sad to see no pics of the gliders visible in one photo. A Bocian, a Baby (I think). And lots of wings, plus some on trailers. Condition appalling…

One of the bombs dropped by the “Typhoons” is still around, on the wall of the canteen in Gilze-Rijen. It was a fire extuingisher painted green and fitted with fins at the back.

The museum has started restoration recently. Great to see it in the workshop and on its way to recovery. Knowing the workshop staff, I am sure they will have fixed in no-time!

Just too easy to blame spotters……

Never blamed the spotters. But I caught somebody out claiming to be a spotter recently who was trying to force his way into a trailer on the airfield. Having a look around an airfield to spot planes or to see if there’s something of value are two different things, but one can be a good cover for the other unfortunately.

Not at all familiar with the installation of Rotax engines, but would it be possible to use an auto wheel locking nut to secure the engine? (Not too familiar with auto locking nuts either!).

In some cases the engine was disassembled properly. I have seen photos of a case where it was hacksawed out of the firewall. Using other nuts will not help there, even if available. A recent case in Germany saw collatoral damage to two other aircraft two when they were hit by the stolen car used to get the engine out of the hangar. Simply pushed the aircraft aside. Two years ago (I think) there was a pair of Gator vehicles stolen from a glider club hangar too, and driven out right over the wing of a glider (totalling the aircraft). Makes you want to cry…

Dover Harbour board have applied to dredge on the Goodwin Sands. A petition against it sights ( among its reasons) the disturbance of wrecks including war graves.

There’s still a KLM Fokker F.III down there that was landed there in Octobet 1923 after an engine failure. All occupants picked up by boat before high tide…

To be fair, discouraging visits from non-pilots seems to be just one measure. Less people on site means less info about the site being shared in the public domain. Same goes for a close look at the Facebook postings some owners make. “Hooray: aircraft X flying again after fitting a new zero-houred engine” does not help for a low-profile in the public domain.

    hi,
I did read a comment from a airfield manager after a recent theft “I hope he gets a good long sentence, and when he gets out I will offer him a job cause he removed the engine etc very professionally”. There was also a case recently on the continent where 2 or 3 east Europeans were stopped and they had 6 engines all from Italy, do “spotters” in these other countries get blamed, or is it a English thingy?

Not the same thief as a case I saw recently then, where the aircraft suffered 8K euros worth of collatoral damage from a hacksaw being used to cut the motor mounts…

Where else would one find reliable TBO/SMOH detail etc?

One aircraft involved was brandnew. No rocket science there to figure out low TBO time. The other was in the same hangar.

Yeah, two weeks ago they hit an airfield nearby (the Netherlands). Two Rotax 912s, both relatively lowtime. Engine mounts, turbo, accessoiries, engine instruments and all. Lots of collatoral damage to the airframe in the process, very crude removal. They’re not the first on the continental side of the Channel. Suspected to go to Eastern Europe into the MLA market over there. There’s more and more airfields banning non-pilot visitors, to help prevent this kind of brazen theft.

Whatever happened to the Klemm (25, I think) fuselage that used to be with the Biggin Hill museum/collection many years ago?

Does anybody know if the Klemm 35 that went down near Elstree this afternoon was on its way to Duxford? It would seem odd for a Swiss classic aircraft to be pottering around in the UK and not be on its way to Duxford… Two crew OK, aircraft not so but will probably be rebuilt.

The revealing of the memorial took place shortly after the funeral service with military honours of Sgt. John Keogh, in the presence of his family and all those who contributed in some way to his recovery and identification in 2014.
