More parts found, the list is slowly diminishing. If anybody is able to help out with the following it would be very much appreciated:
– Main wheel tyre
– Tailplanestrut attachment fitting that bolts onto the tailplane spar (left and right, front and back)
– Airbrake system bungees
Latest work done includes more ply repairs to the fuselage, and lots of new gusset plates and corner blocks.
Here’s a little on the Australian Doves.
Riley Dove VH-NBM (04416) has been parked minus an engine for many years at Wallan Airport
That certainly is going nowhere. I would classify this as abandoned. Missing an engine and various parts, sitting outside in the saltish south-VIC weather for some 10+ years without maintenance would not make this a viable potential flyer.
DGH- VH-OBI was in the hands of receivers earlier this year so I guess it may well be out of action. The NTPS at Mojave have a Dove that is airworthy.
Looked after VH-OBI for a while. Understand it has been stored at Tocumwal since 2004. Is in very complete condition, indoors. Potential flyer, but needs a thorough inspection and works on the engines plus a new radio. lots of spare parts though. Have pics somewhere if you’re interested.
Preservation is an important thing. Feasability is another.
Low-speed nose-over with only the prop touching the ground?
Low-speed nose-over with only the prop touching the ground?
Can’t bring myself to post a glider – this is about as close as I’m going to get !
May I remind you that even the Wright Flyer was after all just a glider with an engine fitted? 😉
Thanks, I noticed that. Am looking into possibilities of getting someone to rescue this one. We’re quite busy with ours the upcoming years however, and our storage room is running out with the 5 classic gliders we have amongst us, as well as the time we have (club glider maintenance, and we’re pushing a K7 restoration as well at this time)…
Some British turrets in the collection of Militaire Luchtvaart Museum at Soesterberg, Netherlands. I’m quite sure somebody will be able to fill you in which ones exactly.
Hi Dave,
Don’t worry. Wasn’t forced, just breaking it off along the cracks that were already in the plywood (which was the reason we needed to repair it in the first place) 😉 The glue joint itself was a poorly mixed one from a later repair, and that went even without using a hammer… It’s all gone now, and we’ll recover it with 2mm ply once we’ve repainted the attachments. In the meantime I’ve found an old CofA sticker that was actually glued over in another poor plywood repair that we redid… We have grown quite suspicious of any repairs we come across, which is usually a good basis for a sound restoration. Just takes a considerable amount of time…
As an aside: does anybody with gliding connections here just happen to have a port ASW-20 aileron lying about? One of our field’s gliders is in need of one…
Eric
Dave, thank you for the pics in your thread.
Meanwhile over here: some new upper ribs being put in in the aft fuselage as the old ones had bent beyond use. And more holes appearing in the front fuselage to get proper access to the interior.
Gliders:
HQV is an SZD-51-1 Junior, other glider in same pic is probably a Junior too, as is the one in the Robin painting
HAS is an SZD-50-3 Puchacz
Dave,
Always interested in the Kite. Any recent pics to see how it’s doing?
Eric
@FB: yes, that’ll definitely see some airtime next year (not under the T21 though)!
The promised pics of the repairs to the left side of the front fuselage, with some new structure being put in.
I am afraid the structural damage (although severe) is not the problem. Structure can be replaced, as shown after the ‘Albatross’ damage. It will be the heat damage to the (little) remaining structure that will prove to be the end of this airframe I would say.
