“Piece of cake” by Geoff Taylor – not to be confused with the TV drama! An absolutely gripping read about an Australian Lanc pilot, from the day before being shot down, his incarceration, escape attempts, through to his repatriation to England at the end of the war. Sometimes sad, other times extremely funny.
A long time ago, on a forum far, far away…
For my first (and only) post on WIX I had the temerity to answer a question on RAF Dakotas that had remained unanswered for three days. I even confessed that my info came from one of my Encyclopaedias. This so upset the resident ‘expert’ that he wrote several most amazingly offensive posts. The most polite thing he called me was an “anorak”, a nickname I now ‘wear’ with pride! The fact that the info I provided was correct and exactly what the OP wanted was immaterial to him.
A gentleman by the name of Tim Savage pointed out that without us anoraks, there would be no warbird movement. Who would the experts sell their books to? Who would go to airshows or museums?
Yes, there is a little bit of hot-headedness here, more brought on by the emotional cut and thrust of debate than anything else, but little pettiness. The experts here are happy to share their considerable knowledge with us anoraks, and seem to enjoy our enthusiasm.
What’s wrong with this forum? For me, not a lot. Maybe a ‘like’ button on posts…
Ordered Vol.1 online. It was delivered in just over a week (I live in Christchurch, New Zealand), packaged in a sturdy box and a ton of bubble wrap. I was so impressed that I purchased Vol.2 as soon as I had read Vol.1. Again, delivered in just over a week, and just as well wrapped.
Go for the book, as who needs shoes when you have your feet up, having a good read?
Hi Dave
You’ve probably already done this, but have you tried contacting The Spitfire Society?
