    The pylons themselves may or may not be the same. But the angle they’re mounted is different between A/B and C models.
    Sidewinder pylons are more downward pointed, middle pylons more upwards pointed on A/B models. Inner pylons may be around the same angle.

    I think you are confusing the JH-7 and JH-7A
    also the Tornado cannot carry four AShMs

    No, they’re just different aircraft, the first one’s a C, the second a B model.
    The angles are different on the other wing pylons aswell.

    Its very easy to modify ANY aircraft to be neutrally unstable like the F-16, its just a matter of shifting the CoG back to match the CoL

    Sure, it’s very easy, that’s why the F-15SA has not seen any delay at all.

    There is only 1 bay for flares though , much fewer than others aircraft, this is F-16 flares dispenser , if the one on F-35 is the same size then it can carry about 15 flares

    Alternatively , below is the flare dispenser on F-15 , given similar size F-35 can hold about 20 flares

    Your second pic shows an A-10. Nevertheless, I’m pretty sure the flare dispenser bays on the F-16 and the A-10 are the same size, but you can either load them with 15 bigger flares or 30 smaller ones.

    Not necessarily. The deeper middle is where the ejector racks and the AAM fins go. Same as F-22.

    In an essentially clean aircraft, at its optimal supercruise aircraft, and without the full avionics fit/weight that will go with the full Gripen E.

    What is an essentially clean Gripen? Even of the Demo, I don’t think there are any pics showing it without pylons. Those 7 pylons alone create more drag than a couple of missiles.

    Even if the full Gripen E could sustain M1.2 with the same wingtip missile configuration as the Gripen NG… that still only applies in straight and level flight at its optimal altitude. Any maneuvering, or a useful load, etc, would result in the aircraft having to resort to AB.

    How is that different to other fighters except F-22 and maybe EF? Hey, it’s called turn and burn for a reason.

    A tanker is not volume limited but weight limited. A wider fuselage would not help. If it’s heavier, fuel load is reduced even.
    A wider or generally larger fuselage only increases fuel load if you don’t want to install fuel tanks in the cabin space and there’s still a weight margin left with full wing and lower fuselage tanks. If this drawing is correct, the 707 fuselage would not have increased the KC-135’s fuel load even if the engines could have handled more weight, because the lower fuselage compartment is actually smaller:

    The pilot knows the Sidewinder has locked on to the target if he hears the lock on sound. It doesn’t tell the pilot whether the target is in range or not. It could also be locked on to the sun – hardly a target in range.
    In an A-10 or any other radarless aircraft, the pilot has to use its Mk1 eyeball sensor to guess the range to target. The sensor has very high resolution but offers no range data.

    In aircraft like the good old F-5, ranging in wvr mode is the primary function of the radar, it is pretty useless apart from that.

    And btw, in a tail chase esp. at low level, the range of a short range ir missile is very limited. You’re wvr even with bvr missiles.

    It may well be a limit with 2270L DTs, but not clean. I can only imagine they added ramped intakes due to the fact there’s an ADV but that said, barely any fighter currently with variable ramp intakes actually needs them.

    The Tornados are limited to ~ M1.3 not because of Hindenburger tanks but because the intakes are fixed. Get over it. The Hindenburgers are subsonic iirc but I can’t be bothered to check.
    The Tornado had variable ramp intakes because there was a requirement for M 2+ capability. But that was always on paper. As far as I know, even on check flights i.e. with a completely clean aircraft (no pylons), pilots reached M 1.6, 1.7 tops. Like the data from the manual suggests, surprise surprise.

    The B-1B was limited by structure relative toe B1A. B1B was designed to have 1/10th the RCS of the B1A though.

    The difference is air intakes. The Su-24 similar to the Tornado and B-1 was a (in theory) M 2+ aircraft, M 1.35 after they changed the intakes to fixed ones.

    I also question what that fight envelope you’ve shown is for but it doesn’t say Tornado or GR4 anywhere and the speeds and ceiling is all wrong. Data Basis – Estimated.

    It is for an Italian PA 200. I’ll let you figure out what that is. I know it says estimated but that is a hell of a lot better than useless glossy brochure “data”.
    Drag index 20 is with 7 pylons only – with Sidewinders and ECM/dispenser pods, drag index is 40, top speed less than M 1.3

    So? Speed limit is M 2.2 just like the manual says.

    OK, riddle me this. What is the top speed of B-1A vs B-1B? What is the top speed of early Su-24 Fencer A vs later models?
    Forget about M 2.2 and M 1.3 at sea level. That is the placard limit. And a loaded Tornado is barely able to reach M 1.3 and a little over M 1 at sea level so why bother with variable intake ramps. German ECR Tornados (the newest jets) came with fixed intakes right from the production line.

    You don’t understand. Tornado operators RAF and GAF (not sure about the others) have locked the intake ramps on their Tornados hence the M 1.3 top speed.

    You need to learn how to read a graph. The one you posted clearly (well not for everyone it seems) indicates a top speed of M 2.45 for an -220 equipped F-15C. It is less then that for an Eagle with -100 motors. M 2.5+ sure, but only on a cold day over Montana.
    But why bother with actual flight manuals when you can quote USAF fact sheets. :stupid:

    What is the experts opinion regarding the J-20s area ruling?
    It looks off to me and with DSI intakes, I wouldn’t be surprised if the supersonic performance is on the lower side.

    But it is certainly nice to see good photos.

    The RAF also state M1.3 for the Tornado. These are clearly normal operational limits and probably include drop tank carriage.

    That is their top speed (clean) because the intake ramps are locked.

    You sure about the F-15 only managing M2.25?

    He clearly wrote -100 engines.
    He also wrote even with -220 or -229 engines, top speed is less than Mach 2.5 which the graph shows.
