The F-15 is intended as pure carrier. No need to go into combat. As such it will cruise at most efficient altitude and speed and speed up when launch comes up. It may not be particularly fast, but it increases the envelope of the missile and makes it more mobile.

If theres no need to go into combat, there are other, bigger platforms that offer more range.
I wonder if those containers can be jettisoned. Most likely not, because the idea will be dropped.

Note: Any Super Hornet purchased by Greece would more than likely be equipped with the much more powerful F-414-GE-402 (EPE) turbofans. Making on the order of 26,400 lbs each vs the current 22,000 lbs of the standard F/A-18E/F. :diablo:

Time for a well known quote, although its from F-111B times: “All the thrust in Christendom will not make a fighter out of this aircraft.”

The advantage of two powerplants is that you increase the power per weight more proportionate to the volume of the space used. As you increase volume your surface area is minimized for the workload, therefore a twin engien design has advantages for hauling loads further or faster. With each engine the relative complexity of design and maintenance costs increase. Therefore twin engine fighters are a design risk in and of themselves, will the cost-benefits of the second engine be an efficient increase in both workload and complexity? A three engine fighter would further increase the power to weight advantage, but with the decidedly unbalancing factor of more disadvantage due to increased complexity. Its all about the cost-benefit tradeoffs.

When is the last time you saw a three-engine jet design proposal? Seems like the F-108 was the last.

Wasnt the F-108 supposed to use two of the B-70s engines? I can only think of the A-5 proposal with a third engine.

I presume, 4 missiles on this F-15C, 2 missiles in one container!
The container doesn’t look stealthy as that container proposed for the F-22/FB-22. Anyway, doesn’t have to be…
I can’t tell you, how the missiles are launched from the container!
Please notice the 4 Aim-120’s on the fuselage! I have never seen them on a F-15C in that configuration.

Range is probably going to suck with those huge containers and just a single tank. Better bring back the CFTs I’d say.
The AMRAAMs on the fuselage are a nice idea. 10 missiles total, but more drag. Not needed imho.

If Greece is looking mainly for an interceptor, this more or less rules out one jet. 😀
The EF would be the way to go then.
If they want multirole, why not just buy more F-16s. Or Rafale it they want more than 40 and retire some older jets.

Well duh, the F-15 uses two of the same engine as the F-16 uses one. That means at least in any given time, double the fuel consumption.

I dont think it works simply that way. Engines on the F-15 likely use less gas ie rpm for the same speed. The F-4 for example also has more range than an F-104, or the F-18/Eurofighter (which has comparable engines) compared to a JAS-39 or a T-50.

As i said the f 16 is designed to fly with bags. This will allow a combat radius of ~ 650Nmiles in AA. It’s less that the ~ 750 Nmiles of the Flanker familis, but not by much.

huh? Thats better than the combat radius of an F-22 or F-35 which is about 600nm. How is the Viper going to achieve that? 2*600 plus 1*300 ext. fuel plus CFTs?

And reg. F-15/F-16 comparison: The F-15 usually carries a lot more external fuel than a standard F-16 so I doubt the Viper can stay in the air longer than an Eagle. That probably works for a clean Eagle vs a Viper with external fuel.

Another thing: The F-18 can stay in the air for quite a time, longer than an F-16 I think, a reason why the Swiss AF preferred the Hornet. But its range sucks nevertheless.

external bags takes away stations from weopons and external EW pods. and u need both internal and exteranl jammers for extra protection. Su-30 has more balance loads out which gives it enormous flexibility not to mention air refuelling further away from battlefied.

Not true for F-15 and F-16. Both can carry their maximum missile load of 8 or 6 plus max. external fuel, except if you need an ecm pod for the Viper.

Secondly, as I’ve said before, unless you get enough direct hits (or near direct hits) overriding its chaffs/flares, you’re not taking it down that easily. Remember, it was DESIGNED to get shot the hell out of, that’s what the A-10 is all about: becoming a target, getting shot at.

You shouldnt forget all the A-10s that were damaged and made it back only to be buried in the desert wont help you much. It doesnt matter if you get shot down or make it barely back to base and your plane will not fly again for the next few months.
Im not saying the A-10 cant take some punishment. But its loss rate in a real war wouldnt be low.

    In no particular order:

F-15: King of the skies. Reintroduced the pure fighter concept and introduced some nice features that are now considered standard for fighters like HOTAS, bubble canopy, 9g airframe, low wing loading.

MiG-25/31: best interceptors, big and long ranged.

F-14: best carrierborne interceptor/fighter with the most advanced naval airframe.

F-4: Cold war jack of all trades with good enough performance in most roles, enough to get 5000+ orders and still flying today.

Su-27: SU/Russian big stick with lots of agility, range, weapons. Nice adaptable design.

F-111: First tactical all weather low level attacker that combined speed of tactical jets with accuracy, range and payload of bigger types.

F-117: First stealth “fighter”. Altough fairly limited in its roles, it had a huge impact in military aviation.

MiG-21: I dont really like it, but its the most built jet fighter and still living on in Chinese copies. Backbone of many air arms.

    A-4: A marvellous design.

Harrier: Best and only more or less feasable solution to airbase vulnerability. Would have been the only tactical jet in WW3 after a few days. 😀

For instance LM is AFAIK not interested in integrating the Kongsvinger NSM missile with the JSF.

Without the NSM, Norway is not really interested in the JSF, so the integration is likely.

In a high risc enviroment you have a single target-run only and two extra stores will add nothing to your hitting-power really.

It adds another heavy station so the Gripen can carry two fuel tanks and two heavy weapons. This gives a lot more flexibility with Taurus, 2000lb bombs or ASMs.
    Better than Eurofighter. 🙂

FYI, the jets that were airborne first at 9/11 are now retired.
These are 2 F-16A ADF from the North Dakota ANG, operating out of Langley and 2 F-15A operating from Otis.
The Vipers are in museums whereas the Eagles are (still?) rusting in AMARC 🙁

Instead of using the F-18 airframe as starting point, the F-14 could have been used. The end result is another airplane anyway. The latest AESA SHs dont even share avionics with older Hornets. To point at commonality between Hornet variants to justify the SH is bs. My guess is the Tomcat 21 would not have less in common with older F-14 compared to the Hornet family, because a complete airframe redesign would not be necessary. Much like the new MiG-35, the exterior and thus the aerodynamics could stay the same.
Of course, such a move would be a lot easier if the tooling was still there.
Instead, the F-17 airframe was “optimized” twice, each time resulting in worse performance.

Very interesting. I suppose these are the same mods as proposed for Gripen N or DK.
Seems like a good choice for the Swiss AF to replace the Tigers. 🙂
