Is the Ellipse actually delivered to Benin or still a prototype? According to Wikipedia it’s undergoing certification.

The Force Aerienne Populaire de Benin has ordered two Grand Duc to monitor their coastlines around the capital Porto-Novo. The Grand Duke is a so-called “aerial territory surveillance system” and differs from the original version only in its comprehensive on-board instrumentation including autopilot, equipment for night flying, GPS, Iridium satellite communications, transponder, digital camera, Geobox system for tracking the aircraft from the ground, etc. The first production Ellipse appeared at the June 2011 Paris Air Show, painted in the colours of the Air Force of Benin.

Some of the stuff the guy xairforces posts is Photoshopped, like this one, and the Cessna 337, so beware.

If it wouldn’t be arrogant, here’s a link to an article of mine on the Trinidad and Tobago Air Guard:

Would really appreciate any questions and/or input.

    Thanks

Speaking of African air forces and affordable equipment, I’ve attached a very interesting photo of a couple of AB.47s from Congo-Kinshasa. Does anybody have details regarding colors and markings on the example in the foreground? I can make out the flag insignia on the cabin, rear of the door. What color is the airframe, though? What about the stripes on the cabin and the vertical tail surfaces? Markings on the fuel tanks? Tail and main rotor colors, including stripes on the tail rotor and main rotor tips, if any? Skid color? I would love to build a model of this one if I could get more details.

That’s a concern Martinez. However Ghana isn’t as bad as say Tanzania in terms of education etc.

Interesting point about maintenance, when Nigeria gifted the L-29s:

    http://www.modernghana.com/news/237891/1/the-nigerian-re-invasion-of-ghana-i.html

You will note the Ghanian admission of a lack of a “maintenance culture”.

Nigeria I always pity. For cost reasons their own substantial overhaul facilities were never used to effect.

I’m sure that cost has a fair deal to do with it. But that begs the question: Why acquire such aircraft when you can’t adequately maintain them? Nevertheless, I admire some of those African pilots- they must have guts. I wouldn’t have the nerve to crawl into, say, an Ethiopian Mi-8, or a DRC Su-25, or a Malian MiG-21. Especially an Ethiopian Mi-8. Have you seen those crates? They look like they would fall apart in mid-air.

Can anybody identify the insignia on the front of this AB.206? Anybody have a good image of it? I am not sure, but I believe it’s from either Abu Dhabi or Dubai.
