There’s Tons of Uglies Out There

Here are but two- the Caproni Transaero and the Nieuport Triplane. Check out this site:

It’s devoted to ugly aircraft. You’ll find tons of absolutely hideous examples there!

    Triangular Marking

regarding this so-called ‘new’ Iraqi ’roundel’…

It amazes me what a ‘little’ western influence and Wiki-mania can do. There has been no visual confirmation of this ‘new’ roundel anywhere – this is to me, simply no more than ‘fan-boy’ artwork posted as the truth. Taking into account that the stars have been removed from the flag (Ba’athist influence yes – pre-dating Saddam – intended to symbolize pan-Arab unity with the UAR) and the catch-22 involved in trying to remove the ‘God is Great’ slogan – which was instituted by Saddam, there is no reason whatsoever to discard the original air force emblem (which IIRC has been discussed here previously) who’s central figure simply meant ‘army’.

That same triangular marking dates back to at least the 1930s.

Yes, indeed, the triangular marking does have a pedigree long predating Saddam. See further clarification I received from John Cochrane regarding the Iraqi flag. Not sure if I would go so far as to attribute the stars to Ba’athist influence, but I do agree on your other points. I welcome any disagreement or clarification that might further elucidate this matter for me.

    Hi Greg,

Just a note on the Iraq flag. With the formation of the United Arab Republic in 1958 the basic red, white and black flag was used with the addition of a number of green stars. As the ‘mother nation’, Egypt had no stars. Flags were then adopted in order of joining. Yemen, first had one star, Syria, 2nd had 2, Iraq 3rd got 3. The UAR didn’t last long but flags remained the same.

    Very Neat!

Talking of desert camo scheme, I can figure out that they tend to stick terrifyingly to the practice of patterning it after that on the Mi-17 of Force Aerienne Nigeriennne.

To be realistic, I have had no idea of what happened to the surviving Hind (albeit very exhilarating and awesome.) until the time this one appeared in recent parade event in Niamey. 😀

I was read that they had already lost one hind gunship in the struggle against the Touareg insurgency that has been flaring up for years.
Did chinese ever finance them again to make up for the loss after then?

I hope to be able to find someone who know about it every nook and corner.

Very impressive! Thanks in particular for the Niger Hind! Again, another country I never knew used this one. You are among a number of people on this site that never cease to amaze me.

    Gabon Presidential Guard

Very very nice and uniq photos of Gabon prop A/C from the 70’s…. color pics and most of them are in flight!!!

    http://skyraider.org/skyassn/otherpics/borne/borne.htm

The T-6s with the blue-orange-black roundels are from the Gabon Presidential Guard. There is even a Heller 1/72 kit of an overall dark blue T-6 with these markings. Strangest kit markings I have ever seen.

    Darn That Profile

    http://www.modelingmadness.com/reviews/korean/ussr/alcott15uti.htm

I build the same MiG-15UTI, and painted it based on the profile. Looks like a repaint is in order, dang it… Thanks for the correct information, gentlemen.

    Cambodian MiG-15UTI

I am looking for pictures of Cambodian Mig-15Uti !!!!!

    Can anybody help me???

    Thanx

Here are a picture and a profile. The profile inaccurately shows multi-color camouflage, whereas the picture appears to show only dark green on top. It appears that the light-gray undersides are accurate, but the aircraft may be overall green. Drop tanks look to be a light color, maybe the underside color, or perhaps natural metal.

    Chad Su-25

Just found this picture of a Chadian Beech 1900 on http://www.aircraftslides.com. But the really interesting part is in the background- what appears to be the front half of one of their Su-25s.

    It is an SF-600

Flex297 Sierra Leone 9L-LBC is a Partenavia AP-68TP, and not a Siai Marchetti SF.600 as reported.

    regards,
    Hendrik van der Veen

    .

Actually, I’ve done some research, and have been able to confirm it is indeed a SIAI Marchetti SF600A Canguro.

    Aircraft/Serial Number?

    Sudanese Mil Mi-1, Khartoum 1970

    http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c339/fabe27/MilMi-1Khartoum1970.jpg

Don’t be fooled by the UAR flag, Nasser was special guest at the parade and the flag was flown in his honour.

Anybody know the aircraft/serial number on this one, and where it might have been positioned?

However, both Massoud and Dostum used several variants of roundels which makes this issue even more confusing – and of course more interesting 😉

    Just like Afghanistan itself!

    Afghan Northern Alliance MiG-21

I have a profile from the ACIG site of a Northern Alliance MiG-21 with a black-white-green triangle roundel. It’s got the normal red on the bottom of the triangle painted over in white, as well as the characters in the white areas overpainted. As far as I know, the ACIG site is pretty reliable.

    Very nice find 🙂
I’ll try to find out to whom it belonged (there never was a Northern Alliance Air Force nor a NA roundel)
