…and it’ll make an even better floatplane!

Ah, yes- floatplane versions of perfectly fine land-based aircraft. Spitfire, C-47, Wildcat. The last one was nicknamed the “Wild Catfish.”

    Westland Lysander Beach Strafer

I’ll post some more soon, but here’s the Lysander P.12 beach-strafing monstrosity. It was apparently very manoeverable. I also threw in a picture of the Nimrod with the bulbous nose and tail.

Fun idea for a thread! Nothing better than weird ulcers, odd antennae, and the likes.

The An-2F artillery spotting plane, a prototype was built and flown but this is a lovely piece of Soviet retouching-deluxe.

Speaking of weird An-2 modifications, how about the An-2E Wing-In-Ground (WIG) variant?

    WB-57

Here’s one to start us out- a NASA WB-57. This one is definitely a strange mutation of the original B-57.

    Rwandan Fouga Magisters

Does anybody have any images of Rwandan Fouga Magisters, or know where I might obtain any? I am specifically interested in colors, and placement of markings and serials. Thanks.

It is a legal requirement for them to be marked. You can look it up on the Internet.

    ‘The Law of Armed Conflict

    COMBATANT STATUS AND INSIGNIA

All aircraft used in armed conflict should be clearly marked with national insignia indicating that they are military aircraft.

Those markings normally include both national colours and an emblem or roundel indicating the military character of the aircraft.’

Is this US law or Geneva Convention? Seems to me like low-visibility markings are in the letter, and not the spirit, of this law. Why don’t they just apply a model decal roundel somewhere? That would do just fine. It would meet all stipulations of the law, and cost a lot less. 😉

So why bother with nationality markings at all, then? If IFF allows ID of threats, visual ID isn’t necessary. And since low-visibiilty is intended to make aircraft less conspicuous “close-up,” I don’s see the need to bother with nationality markings any more on low-visibility schemes.

    Clarification on Cuban Skymaster

Although not an ‘air force’ it is an interesting find – here’s a couple pics to help clarify… this 337 was one that was shot down.

    JJ

Yes, thanks for providing the clarification on the Cuban Skymaster. I was going to do so when I posted the image, but had to run because of something that I can’t remember now. By the way, cy24driver, that’s a very interesting green, blue, and yellow roundel on the Kazakh Mi-17. Is it an older version, or an alternate current roundel?

    More Skymasters

OK gang, here we go… I’ve got another profile project on the go and now the fun begins… looking for military operators of the Cessna 337/O-2 Skymaster. Any and all of them, especially anything obscure – just not those from the civilian ‘warbird’ scene.

    Montenegro Aerospatiale Gazelle

I’ve attached an image of an Aerospatiale Gazelle from Montenegro. The serial is 12752, probably the former Serbian serial number. The roundel is red with a yellow-orange surround. This is apparently now the official roundel of the Montenegro air force.

    Montenegro Roundel

    Found this a couple days ago… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Roundel_of_the_Montenegran_Air_Force.svg

I reexamined the photo, and was able to make out the yellow surround on the fuselage roundel. So, it appears we we have our first confirmed image of an aircraft from the Montenegrin Armed Forces. Makes me wonder why it’s taking so long to get any images of aircraft from Tajikistan!

    Montenegro Gazelle, Continued

Yes, I did compare the Montenegro Gazelle with a photo of a Serbian one, and the overpainting is indeed in the same areas as the former Serbian roundel and the red-white-blue horizontal stripes on the fin. Very interesting- now I can build a model of this one!

    Montenegro Gazelle Roundel

I have a high-res photo of the Montenegro Gazelle I wasn’t able to upload, and I zoomed in on it. The photo was taken in December of 2006. The serial number on the tail is 12752; I presume this is the former Serbian serial number. I was not able to discern any details on the roundel, though. Could it be merely a red roundel temporarily painted over the Serbian roundel to cover it up, with the intention to paint the remainder of the Montenegro roundel at a later date? There appears to be a rectangular gray patch of over-painting under the roundel, as well as some under the serial number.

    Montenegro Gazelle

I was very surprised to find a Gazelle from Montenegro. Any speculation on the fuselage roundel? Might it be a representation of the flag?

    TTDF Cessna Super Skymaster

Yeah, that Sudanese Fantan shocked me, too! Here’s one I haven’t seen posted yet- a Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force Cessna Super Skymaster. It’s black-and-white, but I’m checking on the color scheme with Dan Hagedorn, a noted expert on Caribbean, as well as Central and South American, military aviation. If he can’t tell me, I don’t know who can…
