MikeJ: Thanks for the heads up – the May edition is out here in the UK tomorrow so looking forward to that more than usual!

Willip: Thank you, I’m sure you have some great memories, I would have loved to share a burger and shoot the breeze with the man himself…. Do you have any pics from those times by any chance? I understand that Lec always found having the use of their own aircraft very useful in their overseas endeavours. Didn’t they also have a Gemini in the early days too? (Back when they were still Longford Engineering). As to the personalised reg marks, this is also mirrored by the F1 car designed by Mike Pilbeam for the ’77 season & run by Lec Refrigeration Racing (basically David’s own team) – the Lec CRP 1, again using Charlie’s initials. Of course, this was the car in which he had his almighty shunt.

Self edit: No – it was an Anson / Avro 19!

It’s such a shame that the site is going to become a Sainsburys (apparently!) – the photos I’ve seen show such a nice little field… The loss of the business must’ve been a pretty big blow to Bognor too.

Didn’t the Sapphire have its own issues with centreline closure acquiring the moniker of “Sandpaper Sapphire”?? 😮

Type 45 moored either on the Thames itself or in the estuary I’d think.

Mike – apologies, I’ve been having one of those days and, to be sure, iit’s a sore point with me as you may have gathered.

Your source is wide of the mark, however – well, unless it’s a kind of embittered, tongue in cheek crab humour. The GR.9’s have had such an extensive re – work that they might as well be considered new!

As has been noted by others, the Tornado story is old news too – on the cards since SDR.

At this rate, Cameron will get his no fly zone alright. Trouble is, it’ll be here & not for reasons related to air policing either… What a bunch of shortsighted cnuts!

Harriers knackered?? Where are you getting this information from??

ALL, I repeat, ALL 50+ GR. 9’s have plenty of life left – certainly enough for 10 years – probably more. You know they’ve all recently had a shedload of work, right?? Even the remaining GR. 7’s aren’t beyond further service.

You’ll perhaps also note that they haven’t (nor will they be) been disposed of and, indeed, are still ground run? No? Thought not…

I COULD point you in the direction of several threads elsewhere with contributions from those who really DO know but using your your rather slip – shod research as my benchmark, I can’t be @rsed.

Yes – twice. You must consider, however, the fleet size and total hours flown to put that in to perspective. In addition, both accidents are directly attributable to the aircraft itself (whatever theories exist about the Paris crash, ultimately, the cause was structural failure whilst. IIRC. the second was ruptured fuel lines / fire/ multiple engine failure).

Tu 144 was not worse than Concorde in the role of airliner. Actually it was superior, as it flew higher and faster. Reasons behind its short commercial service are purely economics – soviet passengers couldn’t afford paying 6000 USD for a ticket.

Yes, clearly superior – couldn’t supercruise, gash range and an alarming propensity to fall from the skies….. Remind me again, how many times was it redesigned??

Quite so – I suppose there are many ways to control / patrol an area. You’d still want to keep it simple though & get the best balance of persistence, engagement envelope and situational awareness. Oh, and you need a couple of wings worth up at any one time!

Of course, if you’re brave / daft enough and have sufficient sensor coverage along with advanced IFF, you could have your Ucavs fly racetrack orbits & launch on preset criteria. Could be done now.

True autonomy (ie, true AI) is at least a generation away (think 26 – 50 years) if at all possible (many believe it isn’t) although some fair “Behaviour” (basic instruction sets) may be programmed right now. If true AI IS achievable and it turns bad, we’re all good and screwed long before we give it a shiny new UCAV to play with….

(Try google for info on “Technological singularity” & “Friendly AI”).

As an aside, EMP is vastly overrated and overstated – it isn’t even considered a true “Weapons effect” and can readily be mitigated against.

As an avowed atheist, services ALWAYS take too long!!:) But today isn’t about that….

Watching out for the usual inane presenter questions / statements now whilst awaiting the BBMF & Tonka flypast.
