Here are some verifiable facts from today’s FT

    FT Monday 16 January 2012 page 3
Doubts mount as Scots eye big oil prize.
By Guy Chazan, Michael Kavanagh and Andrew Bolger

……”Splitting the North Sea into English and Scottish sectors using a median line extending out from the land border North of Berwick-upon-Tweed would leave Scotland with 96% of the areas oil production and 58% of its natural gas, according to Alex Kemp, professor of petroleum economics at the Aberdeen university’s business school…. UK’s tax revenue from the whole oil and gas sector totalling £11.1bn this year, Prof. Kemp calculates that Scottish revenues could range from £5bn to £10bn a year for the next 10 years……

….Under current rules oil companies can offset exploration costs in one part of the North Sea against taxes on their producing fields in other parts. Such an option could fall away if the English and Scottish sectors were divided.”

IMO a different Scottish taxation system if it encompassed company taxation as well as personal taxation could see huge areas of concern for oil companies in this context.

“….Oil and gas production peaked more than a decade ago at 4.4m barrels a day, and by 2010 had fallen to 2.4m barrels a day, according to BP. About 41bn barrels of oil equivalent have already been extracted, with only 24bn remaining.”

In a previous post on this thread I have made the point that the SNP is clawing at an oil boon that peaked a long time ago.

“Yet that is still a huge prize: assuming an oil price of $100 a barrel, it represents £1.5bn of value…..”

IMO how far does £1.5bn go in administering an independent Scotland ?

The picture/image/chart in the article in the FT shows how much of the North Sea Oil futures will be closer to Norway and hence why would multinational oil companies grapple with complex and different Scottish and UK taxation when they could settle with one tax system in Norway? Norway remains oil rich, stable and has many attractions for businesses.

Take heed SNP you may have left this Independence argument way too late to make any economic sense of it.

Sandy is right and whether it is the authorities being misquoted or hasty in buckpass

Sandy is right and whether it is the authorities being misquoted or hasty in buck passing / finding and easy early scapegoat it boils down to the same thing.

Irresponsible reporting of unverified facts by sensationalist newspapers.

On the Captain is last to leave ship aspect – this is currently a controversial one as he/she is usually key to providing vital evidence to any enquiry and saving oneself becomes as high a priority as ensuring the safety of all souls on board.

A happy compromise is what is usually expected – a captain of such a large passenger vessel should have excellent risk analysis skills and should be able to decide when it’s too risky for himself/herself to stay on board.

Sandy you are spot on – too much drama reported too quickly

Sandy you are spot on – too much drama reported too quickly by as usual the ‘gutter’ global press.

Yes the Captain of a ship must take responsibility and this is a very serious incident; but there are some very irresponsible news reports about him deliberately sailing in close to shore so he could wave to a friend.

Unlike an aircraft lost at sea (e.g. AF447) in this case most of the evidence is right there and unless she sinks and capsizes completely it should be possible to get all facts together rapidly.

I am with you completely that they have hung drawn and quartered the man very rapidly using the press. He may eventually be found guilty but that is a legal and judicial process for the future.

There is a humorous but realistic way to make this Independence sound even more silly

There is a humorous but realistic way to make this Independence sound even more silly.

Is Mr Alex Salmond going to accept that since he is fighting (oratorically) to divide an Island, how would he like each island off the shores of mainland Scotland to make a parallel claim for Independence from Scotland?

Yes it’s unlikely to ever happen but do you think the islanders get a fair deal from the mainland Scots – no is their answer in the main.

Would the islands be better off governing themselves ? No it would be hopeless projects.

Take heart Mr Alex Salmond you are looking very silly in the eyes of the world with all this extreme Independence battle and you should be out on the streets of Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow at night and see how many people are homeless, sleeping rough and with no one to care for them. Then you should be using your oratorical skills at Westminster to invite your friends at Westminster to join you on some limousine-less walks on the wild sides of your major Scottish cities and request that urgent measures be taken to alleviate the problems by giving Scotland a better slice of the pie.

I think Mr Alex Salmond you will find an ally in The Hon David Cameron on the last suggestion I have made. He will join you although being in the position he is as PM he will naturally require adequate security cover and protection.

Hi I am sure there are many more things we will and likely agree on

Hi LooseHead I am sure there are many more things we will and likely agree on including possibly rugby (do I see a hint of the mention of scrum in your signature/footer).

I have spent many years on the terraces of Murrayfield (freezing cold) cheering for the Scots at 5 (now 6) nations Rugby Internationals during the days of Gavin Hastings and many great Scots before him.

I then walked via every pub with a group of friends and then supped as much beer at the Black Bull in the Grassmarket and staggered home with the friends to a then wife (long an ex) usually at around 3/4 am. The wives usually had their own party which of course ended earlier than the mens’.

No wanton destruction to anything bar temporarily to my liver and good humour was enjoyed by everyone in the pub including often the opposition supporters. No fights, or insults one couldn’t take or give.

There endeth my interest in Saltire waving.

If every Scot with a non pickled brain would vote for the good of every soul in the UK they would walk away from Independence very quickly.

Time for realistic figures to be presented by a responsible newspaper (not SNP propaganda) as I have suggested in a post above for this entire shambles to be costed in time and money. More like who is to issue the blank cheque?

It is a non starter IMO not unless Donald Trump wants to be the first Chancellor of an Independent Scotland.

Hi don’t lose heart let the mods guide you – ask for their advice

Hi Hampden98 please don’t lose heart, let the mods guide you – ask for their advice on how you can get the best from the Forum.

I remember Peter (Mod) had some technical advice and certainly there were other technical contributions when this exact same topic came up months ago in a thread.

The Mods may be happy to point you at the exact URL for the thread I refer to.

One does not have to wait for the SNP plans any decent newspaper could do it….

One does not have to wait for the SNP plans any decent newspaper could do it without including any jibes or inaccuracies.

The plans should be ideally a timeline of processes showing duration of each process minimum and maximum cost (maximum cost if delays occur which they are bound to).

These are the facts the UK Parliament, HM Treasury, the real Scottish people must recognise in black and white before they chose to spend UK money on a foolhardy journey of regional pride and Saltire waving.

What the SNP forget is all the time and money being currently spent by the UK Parliament in debating/discussing this crazy plan is diverting the UK Parliament from addressing more critical social and economic affairs that directly impact on the people of UK including those of Scotland. (Health, Education and Housing).

Mr Alex Salmond excellent orator that he is should be negotiating for a better slice of the pie for his people rather than dividing them from their brothers and sisters in the rest of UK.
