Does anyone know whether Mr. Cameron still wants us to hug a hoodie?

No disrespect meant to the PM himself just a quip at failed policing outside No 10:D

Salford looting: Boy handed in to police by mother

Salford precinct was targeted by looters on Tuesday

A 15-year-old boy who was pictured trying to prise open shutters of a shop in Salford has been arrested after his mother handed him in to police.

    Good for her the mother.🙂

If what I am driving at in post #404 could be got across in both appeals to parent/s via TV and radio of knowing where their offspring are at all times during school vacation and evenings and by enforcing the necessity for regular school attendance during term time minors may be less vulnerable to gang control.

Ofcourse for the die hard rioters indelible dye in water cannon may see them easier identified post rioting by families, and the community.

Where to now that we have a lull or maybe I hope the end?

Where to now that we have a lull or maybe I hope the end?

Parliamentarians are talking about controlling/blocking of social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, RIM(Blackberry) ).
Slightly wasteful overkill as maybe the present parliamentarians in the lower house are too young to recall how code was used successfully by both sides in WWII.
Gangs and groups will form innocuously at first on the Social Media Networks and use agreed acronyms and code words. Just seeing some of the misuse of English in text messages is akin to a code and many have difficulty in deciphering some of it.
What will work is the other WWII and current technique of society friendly spies within the networks.

Yesterday someone asked on this thread if they should ditch a person as a friend on Facebook who was posting biased statements and a vid which showed the Police in bad light. maybe the solution is to avoid comment on or support of any inflammatory statements but to draw attention to these people who then can be monitored by ideally the Social Network administrators rather than by Government. The option to report a post on Facebook is available now with options to send the report to the actual poster, or to Facebook.

Other than controlling social networks which were possibly the method used to communicate locations to riot or loot what else is potentially available as means to reduce especially the young and vulnerable to being drawn into gang culture.

I already posted use of TV and possibly Radio competitions especially during school summer vacation promoted by well known celebrities and TV presenters on lines similar to the annual BBC Children In Need Appeal.
Commercial and business support could be drawn in to provide rolling prizes with long term accumulator prizes on the concentrated viewing and sending of correct text messages (a modern version of Green Shield Stamps). If taken to the full extent it could be the equivalent as accumulator prizes of a training place as an apprentice in a reputable firm, or a years worth of textbooks at University, or a years fees at University, etc

Also regular advertiser sponsored tastefully done reminders to parent/s, guardians and older siblings as to where are your children at this minute and what are they doing? These would not just be during the summer when they should be all day but evenings during term time as well.

Schools and education authorities (empowered by parliament and local authorities) should use advertising to advise parents of the need to ensure their offspring attend school regularly, providing no bogus letters of excuse, reminding them that letters of excuse were filed and monitored and a meeting with parent/s would become necessary at the school if prolonged/regular absence prevailed. Advocating PTA involvement to discuss enhancements to curricula of relevance.

During summer school vacation for children to have an option of subsidised or means tested free place at well managed summer camps on the lines in the USA and Europe.

I will be accused again of being idealistic but there are IMO a majority of the youngsters involved in the recent rioting that are probably not hard core but have been like lemmings dragged in by very demanding and persuasive gang leaders, and it is these young people whose hearts and minds can be swung back in favour of being part of rational society.

We aimed for the stars and reached the moon (desolate though it seems):D

Scotland’s cities may have been spared due to a sad but ironic fact

Scotland’s cities may have been spared due to a sad but ironic fact

From the Scotsman 11 August 2011

A statement from an ordinary Scot in posts in response to the 1st Minister gloating about Scotland being safer than England.

“It was reported the other day that Scotland has the most drug deaths in the whole of Europe:

That’s the reason no-one is rioting in Scotland – they are all high as a kite!

I don’t shudder as it is a cost effective method of having a deterrent

I don’t shudder as it is a cost effective method of having a deterrent

They will succeed as being unmanned for many fixed targets reduces the cost immensely and also provides the option of a controlled detonation of the craft before strike occurs if threat is removed by alien power.

The equivalent of the Cold War is back although some of the potential adversaries may have altered.

Keeping the technology seriously under wraps is the biggest challenge.

Bettering the strike time (to under an hour) will have it’s steep cost curve though.
