I’ll toss my 2 cents in now… (SOC I hope we can openly rant)

I originally joined the Key Pubs forums here… Modern Military.. on a quest for information regarding military aerobatic teams.

Over the last two years I can say straight up, that this portion of the fora has become so overpopulated with single-minded, argumentative, ignorant, web-sourced-quoting, bigoted individuals that it has become unbearable.

I have since spent most of my time on the ‘Historic’ – so-called ‘Flypast’ forum – and generally scan the Modern Military simply for the ‘small air forces’ thread where there is a at least to me a genuine interest in the truly diverse world of aviation around the world.

I’m over 40, college educated, professional, have seen more of the world than most would in a lifetime… open your minds people, there is more to life than what is at home, or what your ‘fave’ hobby is.

Mods, thank you in advance if you don’t delete my post.

I had asked basically the same question a few months ago over on the ‘General Discussion’ board…

I’ve been an ‘aerogeek’ my entire life, yes, I live, eat, breath aviation… well, I have tamed it down a bit in the past few year (seems the friends don’t necessarily share the same enthusiasm I do).

How did I get here??, I was hunting for information and reference material on the world’s military aerobatic teams (for my illustrations), found the ‘Modern Military’ page, posted a thread and then went exploring and found a number of new friends with similar interests. Never really knew this board as the ‘Flypast’ forum – yes I have read and purchased Flypast – but to me this is the ‘Historic’ board and I am certainly happy to dwell here. The depth of knowledge and experience ‘over here’ far surpasses the pettiness of the ‘other side’, easily making this ‘the’ source for informed commentary and shared knowledge.

    following out of curiosity…
    G-BJWJ – Cameron V-65 balloon
    G-CJWJ – Schleicher AS-K 13

    On my ‘home’ register,
    CF-JWJ makes me a Cessna 182B
    CG-JWJ – S-55A Raven (yet another balloon)

I think I’ll stick with the Oxbox…

I recall seeing a lot of coverage of both these aircraft in a couple UK-based av-mags (mid to late ’80s IIRC). I never paid much attention to the Squalus, but the 146 struck me as rather awkward with its side cargo door and ramp configuration – seemed like a step backwards toward the Dakota.

    This one below looks unusual.

    Which are real?

The lowwwww BUFF is real – there is video of the pass (taken from aboard the carrier) out there on the net.

    RCN Banshee

    Just so we’re not forgotten…

(with a little editting to correct myself)

The Royal Canadian Navy acquired 39 former USN Banshees (F2H-3). The 8 hardpoint layout was the same, however, I’ve not seen any pics of the RCN Banshees in an armed configuration – however in RCN use, the outer hardpoints carried a rail for air-to-air missiles (from at least 1956).

The attached pic is the Canada Aviation Museum’s Banjo (note the total lack of pylons). I believe there is one more Banshee surviving in Canada at Shearwater’s museum.

Yankee Air Museum – Willow Run, Michigan

    Quoting from their website…

“On October 9, 2004, the Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run Airport suffered a terrible fire that destroyed the historic hangar housing the museum. Through the heroic efforts of a few members, the beautifully restored B-17, C-47 and B-25 aircraft were moved out of the building before the fire reached them, thus saving the heart of the collection. In addition, all the historic aircraft on display outside of the main building were untouched by the fire. The museum did, however, lose virtually all of the tooling, equipment and spare parts for all of the aircraft plus all of the office and display fixtures and equipment totaling well over $1,000,000 in replacement value. While thousands of irreplaceable artifacts, photos and books were also lost in the fire, the Volunteers at the museum are thankful that the aircraft collection remains largely intact. Only a small number of non-flyable aircraft that were in restoration inside the hanger were lost.”

Great news for my local airshow…

Will she based at Carp or do you think she will fly in from YOW on daily basis?

    Andrew

    Hey Andrew,

All the information passed on to me indicates that aside from the Media day activities at YOW on the 27th, she will be operating out of Carp during the show itself.

I would agree on the MC.205 – but the date could prove interesting as (I would assume – and forgive me for using that word) the HAS in the background seems to contradict the overall generally good condition of the (derelict) aircraft.
