Here’s a slightly interesting question… While Barry Wheeler’s book “Aircraft Markings” explains the symbolism of the colours… What is the meaning/significance of the Iraqi AF insignia… what does it represent? It’s been in existance for, well, ‘ages’, but is there a ‘translation’?
JJ
OK, a little digging an I’ve answered my own question – I’ll just share the info here if anyone’s interested.
Regarding the marking… (from http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/iq%5Eaf.html
“This has nearly not changed since 1931. It is a green triangle with a black border. Superimposed on this has been a representation of the Arabic word “Jaish”, for army, in red.”

update
I suppose I should have mentioned that there are 2 possible answers for number 7 (hint: it includes a cross as well).
Correct answers so far:
JDK: 1 – Canada, 5 – New Zealand
wardie: 9 – New Zealand (slightly sideways answer 😉 )
RPSmith: 7 – Luftwaffe
Fouga23: 12 – Cambodia
bazv: 6 – Zimbabwe (chicken in a basket… with chips?)

Yep. Perfect photographic conditions, apart from the blustery wind.
Although the high wind curtailled some flying yesterday it didn’t affect this brilliant racing car display – provided by Patrick Morgan and his DT Engineering team. Over £1 million-worth. They’re on display on Sunday too!
I’ve got to admit that I think the ‘Wilga’ makes an interesting addition to an airshow line-up. There’s always something aluring about the ‘ugly duckling’.
thanks for the review! I’ve been seeing the trailers and wondering whether its going to be worth it. I think my mind may be made up now.

I’m curious to know when the marking changed – its got be be within the last say 10 years… any one know?
ooo, nice and colourful subject… 35 Sqn isn’t it? anyone have a close-up of the nose emblem?
He’s a couple I just stumbled over this week – no idea how long they’ve existed or when formed but here goes…
Royal Danish Air Force FLSK – ‘Team Baby Blue’ Saab T-17 Supporter
Russian Air Force – ‘Russian Falcons’? MiG-29 nice and colourful – are they for real?
and a flash-back that made my day on Tuesday… Royal Australian Air Force ‘Telstars’ MB.326…
They have the same roundel as Romanian airforce. 🙂
almost… depends on the lighting but it is a dark green centre … (red, yellow, green – pan-african colours)
and thats a change too, my old copy of Air Forces of the World (Hewish, Sweetman, Wheeler, Gunston), and an old AFM pull-out poster have it as Green (outer), yellow and red centre.
keep safe SFF… watch your back and where you put your feet…
I’m going to go out on a limb and assume this would be the same particular location that contains an L-29, MiG-21 and Sukhoi all with rather unique paint jobs in a rather run-down/overgrown out-of-doors setting??

and a bit more relating the the Whereatt ‘beastie’… Mike Henniger started another thread with this info – and he has some recent pics of of 5447 to boot…. http://rides.webshots.com/album/553411223dbswYL
(I had to switch back and forth with the ‘views’ selector for every page – it might work OK for others).

Is the Harry Whereatt one actually airworthy? Other than that, I concurr

Just an update… If my memory still works correctly – Harry Whereatt’s Hurricane is now owned by Michael Potter’s Vintage Wings of Canada. (OOPS sorry, hadn’t read Fleet16b’s post). When i saw it last (4 weeks ago), she’s standing on her gear/centre section (with outer panels removed). I believe she will be going into ‘deep’ overhaul for a couple years.
anyone else seen this Hurricane survivors list… Hawker Huricane Scoiety (I may be repeating someone here) http://www.battle-of-britain.com/BoB2/HurricaneSociety/hurricane_list.htm

Thanks Tango,
another question… for anyone out there… Does anyone know the reasoning behind the ‘fancy’ paint jobs on the Sukhoi, MiG and L29 seen on the museum grounds? (post 391)
JJ
Hi
I think we are still in “Old Iraqi Air Force”
Here some photos,
Regards,
Tango,
By any chance do you have the stories behind those big formations? Were they flown simply for a ‘special’ event? I’d especially like to know about the Jet Provost shots, they look like more than just the ‘ordinary’ promo shots usually done for air forces.
JJ
now thats more like it!
now we’re getting a little closer to modern indigenous miltary aviation! I’m just hoping everyone else realizes that this is an AVIATION forum (as yet there is no ‘land forces’ sub forum) hence my earlier comment.
the last few posts… bring on the drone development… let’s leave the AFVs behind (unless their in targetting shots).
does anyone realy care??
aaand exactly what does this have to to with modern military aviation?? I might as well start a thread with my Grandfather’ s WWI ‘sightseeing’ pics
OK, so I combined GE with my personal hunt for world aerobatic teams… this is what you get…
1) (left) The USAF Thunderbirds (F-16) and (right)Canadian Forces Snowbirds (CT-114 Tutor) at CFB Cold Lake for their annual air show
2) US Navy Blue Angels (F/A-18) at El Centro
3) Brazil’s Esquadrilha da Fumaca (T-27 Tucano) at Pirassununga
4) Chile’s Halcones (Extra 300) – only a couple of the aircraft at Santiago
5) 3 Kiran IIs of the Indian Navy’s team Sagar Pawan (left) on the ramp at Goa (INS Hansa) alongside 4 Sea Harriers
