simply put… its our independence day

Formerly Dominion Day, July 1 (Canada Day) is the one truely official moment when we do it up coast to coast to coast to coast, celebrating the birth and history of the Greatest Nation on the Face of The Earth. And we DO IT UP! (not quite as wild as Queen’s Day in Amsterdam).

The Dominion of Canada was officially given ‘independence’ in 1867 by the British North America Act, which was even more importantly, repatriated in 1982.

I can’t wait to see those big maple leaf clad tails over the hangars at Trenton… It would indeed be a sight to behold – a C-17 landing at Toronto Island – but given the way Toronto City Hall seens to be headed, the Island airport may not make it much longer.

From what I hear, Boeing production is running ahead of schedule, so Canada and Australia may be able to get them very quickly (the RAAF seems to be talking end of ’06 for their first aircraft, with two in ’07 and the last one in ’08 if memory serves).

As for the C-130s, I think it makes a lot of sense – a balance of high and low capability is needed, and buying A-400Ms would have been too expensive and would not fill either the high or low requirement.

I agree, don’t see any reason to wait too long for the ’17s (didn’t Boeing divert USAF production for the UK?). As it stands the C-17 makes the best sense for the Canadian Forces given our proximity to the manufacturer and the level of inter-operability we share with the US military. I still believe that the only Herc replacement in the world is another Herc, and with the infractrusture already in place to handle the Herc the J-model only makes sense.

The previous govenment was ‘gung-ho’ it seems to buy the An-124, and even now their ‘defence critic’ is denouncing the C-17 as ‘uncessary’ and a ‘threat to our sovereignty’…. shake your head… I’d just like to know how they expect to get our Forces to Afghanistan, etc.,… drive?

BTW, has the A400 even flown yet?? I haven’t even gone looking around for it, but it would seem foolhearty to commit to an aircraft with an unknown availability, let alone track record (as the previous government did with the S-92 – has it received its military certification yet?).

hmmm, I’ll lean toward the price-point… 750K (US) for a (Sea)Fury… when 5 years ago a (fully airworthy) Sabre 5 was going for 500K? Personally happy to see any and all flying here and the joys of experiencing the ‘boom’ in Canadian warbirds is absolutely stunning… so… stay back… ’em aren’t leaving… and just what will Mr. Potter of Vintage Wings buy from TFC next????… might be nice to see the Beau fly in Canadian skies (and the CAM example get restored in the same transation)

Supposition and analysis is just that…. I can see the Aussie point of view from here (in the great white north) without any pointers. While the current status quo may involve ‘friendly’ nations – and in reality, no one really poses a military threat to Oz, but we should always have the ability to practice some degree of ‘force projection’ . At least the RAAF still as the ‘Pigs’ and can actually do without some degree of outside intervention in the event of threats/attacks on national interests.

As for the PRC? My travels in SEA (P.I., Vietnam, Thailand) and conversations therein only point to one potential adversary… If I lived in the neighbourhood, I’d be looking into fencing and home security devices. Not that I’m paranoid or into strange theories… but one does have to wonder, when probably the greatest arms race of the last 2 decades is taking place in SE Asia. Australia will be involved in any conflagation that errupts in the region due to proximity, and the ability to actually play a decisive role is mandatory, especially for Oz.

you want small (and I mean smalll) air forces??? here’s a Chadian HIP (forgive me for not knowing the designation… As far as I know, this is the ONLY operational HIP in the Chadian AF (previous was ‘blown up’ shall we say) photos taken by a very good friend working in Eastern Chad… (pics are only 2 weeks old) see “Out of Africa” thread…

If I may be blunt, I think anyone who believes the F-22 will be exported (in its current configuration) is greatly mistaken. If it is ever allowed out for sale it will surely be a greatly modified piece of kit most likely lacking a few ‘bells and whistles’.

If you’re not the USAF, get used to the idea of owning F-35s, Typhoons, Grippens and Super Bugs.

not too bad at all… I think the writing is ‘on the wall’ so to speak… 4 C-17s and 17 (or more) C-130J

I especially like the ‘immediate’ sounding tone of the Strategic requirement. Hopefully the contracts will be let very soon.

another issue that should be addressed concerning ‘radar visibility’ is the radar’s wavelength. Where much of the ‘stealth’ technology that we love and embrace is designed to counter ‘modern’ radar systems, I do recall some mention in the early 90s that the F-117 could be easily detected with the old, dare I say ancient’ Soviet long-range air-defence systems which function at a far lower wavelength the the ‘modern’ AD or AA systems. (and I’m not even going to touch the subject of ‘slippery/visible when wet’)

hmmm… and here I thought I might find some well-balanced opinions on the purchase…

my 2 cents (1.8 CDN funds) … its completely irrelevant who’s product the Venezuelan (or any govenement for that matter) buys… if sr. Chavez wishes to purchase non-American product, that is his perrogative… as it is any other leader in the world. IMO it all comes down to value for money, and if a certain government wishes to ‘blackball’ or ‘label’ another, so be it, there are many others happy to oblige.
