The Il-102 was a ‘private venture’ design from Ilyushin – to try and make a jet-powered version of their most famous design – the Il-2 ‘Shturmovik’
It was a re-hash of a previous attempt – the Il-40 ‘Brawny’………….
Both were outmoded concepts – with rear gun turrets and internal bomb bays.
The much better Sukhoi T8 (also a ‘private venture’) won the day and has evolved into the potent Su-25 Frogfoot.
I don’t have any drawings to hand – but I made a model of an Il-102 – to go with my Il-40 ‘Brawny’….
The whole Il-40 build is at :- http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/models_pages/modl_il-40.html

Ken,
Very impressive build! I still haven’t ventured into resin. Fun subject matter ‘though.

From what I understand, it was part of the engineering staff that went (not so much the technology) and were especially instrumental in the development of the LEM for the Apollo missions.
As for that movie??? I shudder to think that anyone without the ‘joy’ of viewing the CBC actually saw it.
How about having one of your very own?!?!
Well, if TSR.2 can join so can the CF-105 – nuf said.
Anybody have more pics or drawings of the Il-102?? – the Russian equivalent to the Northrop A-9 wasn’t it – as in losing out to Su-25
And you do have a Commie fighter for your avatar…. 😉
…can’t help that… just one of the better airshow shots I’ve taken 😉
and today the Red Arrows
sweet!
Here a a few ‘twists’ on vapor courtesy the C-130 and C-17
Saw the ‘twisters’ from the C-17 at a show a few years back – just can’t find the photos.
Exactly what I was thinking…
(the big one is a USN shot)
Hooray for the ‘Clunk’ at least she did get exported! And , if my memory serves me correctly was the first all-weather interceptor in NATO service.
Arrow technology in the ’25?? you never know, the place was full of spies. Even a couple years ago there was still a politico south of the border calling us ‘Soviet Canuckistan’… ahhh, small minds
interesting points… definitely dependent on aircraft shape, relative humidity etc.. but the ’16 is ‘pulling’ vapor as opposed to shockwave.
starting a “shockwave/’pulling vapor'” thread…
Hi, can you say how you can tell ? Thanks.
on this one shot, the easiest clue it that the ‘vapor cone’ only appears to be on one wing… if the aircraft were indeed near-sonic (like the Super Hornet) the entire rear of the aircraft would be inside that ‘cone’, meaning the vertical tail surfaces would be in shadow.
Hope that helps
How about some green – just the mood today…
Great link for a Saudi hawks vid from Al Ain show 2005 – nice signature at the end with smoke palm and swords.

Link also has Russian Knights with Swifts, Marche Verte other neat stuff – still haven’t checked out the whole site.
I say it looks more like another cancelled design, that does for Canadians what the TSR2 does for the British.
I’m in agreement with you there BIGVERN… still a case of apples and oranges but the similarity between the F-108 and the CF-105 Arrow is striking (more so than the TSR.2) The Arrow was amazing, but I’ve grown to get over it. Its still an amazing story – up there with TSR.2 national pride and having the rug pulled out from under you. Still, some nice bits and pieces at the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa – Nose section, and outer wing panels being the largest.
Might be neat the check the development dates onthe 108… the Arrow technology went all over the place after ’59… engineering into the Gemini and Apollo space programs… The Iroquois engine went to the UK and the progeny went into Concorde… but please, no debates on the Arrow… thats been done to death.
[QUOTE=HuntingHawk]I remember someone saying the ‘LCA going supersonic’ pic and producing the shock wave cloud around it might be a fake because the phenomenon did’nt occur at cloud level ? Well here’s a pic of an F-18 doing the same at cloud level.

…Fake! and a bad one at that… .
I’ve done more than my share of Photoshop work (its part of my job)
and while the props were still spinning… Silwer Valke… PC-7II
