To detect an “stealth” aircraft does not mean that you can target it. Sure, that gives you advantage, but still the aircraft must be engaged by missile with IR/Radar homing head.
Generally speaking, in the era of multi-role, a highly specialised aircraft such as the A-10 is little more than a relic.
I had conversations with Russian Su-25 pilots and i can tell you that they will not trade their Su-25’s for multirole MiG-29’s(for example). In war games or in theory, planes like Su-25/A-10 are obsolete, but in the real world they have their place.
Would it be technically feasible to install a tracking radar, similar to the naval ones for AK-630, and use the gun to knock down incoming AAMs ?
No. The gun right now is guided by radar, but it’s no where near in capability to CIWS like Phalanx for example. And Phalanx weight little more than 6 tons.
It’s useful if someone comes close enough
And the question is what will come close enough. On paper the effective range is 2km.
just a quick question on the Backfire, does anybody know how useful the tailgun is? i’ve always wondered whether its just a dead weight… or whether it might be good enough to do something useful, like knock down an incoming missile.
The gun can fire rounds that act as heat decoys or chaffs. But you know, Tupolev was not the most innovative Soviet designer and he stick with having tailgun on a supersonic bomber.
Any idea how effective the Vikhr is as well as its range when used on the Grach?
Around 10km and the more limiting factor is the Shkval system. System is good, it’s just that to acquire and track tank from that distance is challenging.
As for the Vikhr missile, most of the feedback and opinions is that it is good. Compared to other missile there are some good advantages. The missile have supersonic speed(max 610m/s), so the flight time is lower and that improves the survival chance of the aircraft. Vikhr cannot be jammed as the laser does not illuminate the target, but creates a “corridor” 5×5 meters wide in which the missile flies in spiral path. Guiding is done by the tail and as the distance to target lower, the corridor become smaller. Using this method does not alert the target as the power of the laser is low. Also there is another big advantage. Other laser guided missiles are affected by weather and counter-measures, but Vikhr does not need very precise illumination of the target, so the chance of successful strike is bigger. And the last advantage is that Vikhr does not have homing head, so the cost of the missile is lower.
I guess you have seen this video. The famous story behind the interception of the Tu-16 is that the pilot said that he will strike the left engine and he succeeded. You can see the spiral path in the video. Also there is the story of Shkval trials where the system was so sensitive that tracked flying crows.
Quick search ended with few offers. Most of them are for airframes in flying condition or in need of some repairs. See here and here. In the first link is mentioned that the repairs are done in MIL Moscow plant and i thought that it doesn’t hurt for you to just send e-mail with query. Here are their contact details. You can also try Kiev museum of aviation, they have Mi-26 and maybe can assist you in finding one.
Really? What is the basis for your numbers?
I have reports from HM Revenue&Customs and Deloitte. Also you can check here the budged deficit from 05 to 2010.
And as this thread is way off-topic i hope that the moderator will move the posts to the thread in General Discussion.
I don’t see what Scotland are getting from the union. They have the balance of natural resources* (c.f. England), yet most of the money is being siphoned off to the south of England.
Currently Scotland is with 13.4% budged deficit, even if we add all income from natural resources it will still be around 6.8%. And after that comes the question what to do with HBOS and Royal Bank of Scotland. They were rescued with money from all UK taxpayers, so who must be in control of them? After all their assets accounts for around 1400% of Scotland’s GDP.
It’s ZB-500 incendiary container or as Jane’s definition “fire bombs”.

is it referring to the Frogfoot’s cannon
Yes, it is translated as gun armament.
Also, what variant of Su-25 is this chart for?
This is for the base Su-25 and export Su-25K. I was going to bed when i made the post, so i forgot to include the pages for Su-25T/TM. In the text page there is description of the pylons used. PD-62-8 is for APU-60-1MD launcher for R-60M missiles. 4 of the pylons(BDZ-25) can be replaced with pylons supporting up to 1000kg of weapons.
I’m namely interested in what stores are cleared from each of the ten stations (11 for the Su-25TM), and what weight each is stressed for.
Here you go. 8 of the pilons can support up to 500kg of weapons. In the pages there are weapon configurations given as an example. Like the first one is “256 unguided rockets type S-5 in 8 pods UB-32M”. I guess you will be able to translate the weapon names?

Where are the moderators? Resurrecting that old thread is enough to lock, not to mention how people started to give replies to 6+ years old posts and calling moderator “cocksure”.
but do you remember Matthias Rust
Using this as example for how capable was the Soviet PVO? Nevermind how different is your version, Swerve i thought that you are more serious.
And on the topic, sure any defense can be penetrated with enough force, but at what cost?

“The Fulcrum’s engines smoke heavily and are a good aid to gaining sight of the adversary.”
I was on airshow month ago where there was MiG-29UB and Eurofighter flying. I can tell you that both aircraft had similar smoke characteristics. The whole story about MiG-29 smoky engines is so overrated.
And then comes the part: “The combat record of the MiG-29 speaks for itself”
I don’t know if the author think that only retards will read his text and that’s why he so freely ignore all circumstances about all engagements.
Communists = Fight like ants don’t care about the life of the individual soldier.
Its not a generalization but truth. I am not the most technically knowledgable poster here, but I know my history.
If there is moderator here, this part from your post must be deleted. Nice trolling. And you are welcome to share what is your experience. I come from ex-communist country and i’m old enough to have lived under such regime.
