There’s no planed upgrades for Mig-29’s, wich are going to be retired by 2018, when the first squadron with the new fighter type is going to be operational by plan. BuAF have to choose between F-16, F-18E/F Super Hornet, Gripen, Eurofighter and Rafale. The interesting part is that RSK “Mig” is trying to attend the tender with Mig-29M/M2 and Mig-35.
Hello to fellow Bulgarian.
There is statement from the deputy-minister of defence that there will be new tender for future upgrades for MiG-29’s. And i really hope that their life will be extended to 2020, so the new fighters can be ordered around 2015-2016. Right now the plan for order in 2012 is just wishfull thinking.
Are Bulgaria’s MiG-29s still flying or what’s status at the moment?
They are still flying and the plan is to retire all 16 of them around 2018. By this time the government want to have new fighters in inventory.
Thanks Aspis for the info. J-7 Hotdog i’m just curious what is your nationality?
As for the Hungarian MiG-29 i wish we(Bulgaria) had the money and political will to buy and maintain any retired Fulcrums.
what will happen to these fulcrums? it would be bad news for Greece if Bulgaria acquires these fulcrums.
What is this supposed to be? Bulgaria and Greece are both members of NATO and EU and are in very good relations.
SA-6 was a missile that basically went from drawing board to production without formally proving it worked.
Actualy you are intellectually dishonest in your post. The first succesful interception of real target was in 10 Feb 1964. Then there was tests against target with EW support. And from January 1965 to June 1966 there was state trials and the system was accepted to service in 23 January 1967. I don’t know what count in your eyes as “formally proving”, but the soviet military accepted Kub as ready for production.
955 project has bad streamline hull. Le Triomphant, Ohio look much better.
Looks have nothing to do with actual qualities of the sub. And i’m sure that Russia with all the experience they have, perfectly know what they are doing.
The most recent quote for the Su-30MKI I’ve seen is 100 million apiece.
You were already told in another thread that this is half of the truth. There are few details what the deal includes, but it’s known that there will be modified radar, Brahmos integration and most likely different engines.
You still have 1.4 billion dollars to play with.
I know, just my major goal is to deny any air-strike, or that the enemy will consider the potential loses too light and go for all-out strike. Next i will want to improve my ASW potential. And here lies the deal with the naval port. I want that the Russians will use the post as much as they can and hopefully base some subs there. Then i will go for few Kilo subs or lease them. I’m sure that PRB/FDR will not feel very confident when there is the risk to destroy Russian sub. I may act as Russian’s lapdog, but i will buy my time and avoid any major conflict. As Jonesy wrote this is also a political game. But if i return to my “wanted” list there will be additional Coastal Defence battalion in the face of Bal-E. Also 12 JAS-39 and some ASW helicopters.
First thing to do is to please the Russians. I will offer them the deal to build two civilian nuclear reactors and 20 years access to the southern port for naval base. In exchange i want quick delivery of 12 Tor-1M’s and two batteries of S-300PMU-1 for around 600 million. Also i will request lots of Russian “advisors” to train the army. Then i will push for joint use of one of the airports. The aim is that in case of any conflict, there will be always fair amount of damage and casualties on the Russian side.
You went out of coma?
Sort of 😉 Just too lazy to check all PAK-FA threads and i didn’t remember seening this picture here. Still nice size comparison.

You should be able to get your hands on An-12s, but they’re all at least 37 years old.
There is Shaanxi Y-8. But yes, the price will be much higher.
What would you equip your COIN-oriented air force with?
Almost the same as Distiller choise. Maybe just some Mi-35M’s. And btw this list look somewhat similar to what we have(or better said survived) in Bulgaria, there is Su-25, Mi-8/17, PC-9M, An-26, we miss the UAV part.
There was also Mi-6TZ(ATZ) which was used in mid 60’s to test in flight refueling. But most of the time it was used to fuel airplanes and helicopters on airfields. And both Mi-6TZ/Mi-26TZ can also carry lubricating/machine oil. Here is short movie about Mi-26TZ. But no in-flight refuel.
