Was there much actual Spit? It sounded like there might be a radio hatch.
What do you think Ian :p
The anchor nut does look distinctly British – were German ones anodised?
Thanks Anon – you may be right, they could be from something else as they came with some Hurricane/B-17/Warwick bits. There was a Heinkel part in there too. The Heinkel was lost at night during the Battle of Britain so may have been black I suppose…?
I usually recognise Whitley parts at a 1000 yards and these are not Whitley. You are right about the corrugations, but they were used in a variety of other aircraft and I seem to remember Heinkels also having some parts of similar construction.
There’s a captive nut on the corrugated parts – I have never seen a German one so have no idea how they compare to British ones!
Yes, it’s very expensive. It almost cost 2k and I made the mould myself in order to keep the cost down.
Brian, I think the extruded curves that take the plexi glass will be quite a challenge to form or have made commercially, if you find a solution at reasonable cost then I would be very interested. The moulded plexi I understand is also very expensive to have made, Elliot will be able to confirm this having recently had his Whitley turret perspex made. I have been tempted to do a turret project of some description myself for the museum so I watch with interest! Goodluck, I am sure picking an American Turret will mean more parts etc that are generic with other types of turrret.
And the first pic appears to be a banjo of some sort…
Winter donations 2012-13
Here are a few parts that were donated to the project over the winter period. Many thanks to all who kindly passed these items onto the project.
Alastair Macfarlane retrieved this wing tip from Whitley BD678 in the far north of Scotland in 1967. We are missing the tip on one of our wings so this is an extremely useful donation!

Terry Lawless kindly donated this oil pressure adaptor plate after an appeal on the forum.

Last but not least – this Whitley aileron bracket was found on the beach near Hornsea in East Yorkshire by Andy Stamp. It most likely originated from a Whitley that ditched just off shore during the 1940-42 period. There are some pockets of corrosion but it is a completely useable item. We will keep seaching for any more items after the winter storms.

A big thank you once again to you all.
It looks like a union with a pair of rusty union nuts. I couldn’t say if it was British for certain – they usually have AGS stamped on the body. It could be fuel, pneumatic or most likely hydraulic.
Any aircraft Hindenberg – especially Stirlings! Hope the harness arrived – i’m sorry it took so long 🙂
Yes, that’s the same thing
That looks like a landing compass. It’s hand held and used in a number of multi-crewed aircraft. I have one for my Whitley.

I’ve seen the pics – they are great. If you can find some inspectors stamps they should confirm the manufacturer and then the aircraft type.
Thank you for this information, I never realised that there were 4 crew killed – David Titlow was my great uncle and I now now realise that we were in the wrong place and must have recovered parts from either the walrus or albacore – my father and I are now considering our next move in the quest for the correct site of the crash –
Hi Titlow – any chance of some pics of the bits you found? If you can find any stamps or numbers we may be able to confirm the aircraft type…
Looks amazing – well done Mr Gowans
Thanks for your posts everyone. The local conditions are soft mud, clay deeper down but no idea at what depth. The size of the hole will be approx 4x4m wide. The depth – possibly as much as 10 meters.
The main issue is keeping the sides of the hole from collapsing. My first choice would be to use wood as it’s cheap, readily available and won’t interfere with the magnetometer.
Dave – how is your own project going?
My Patent AH2040 has CG7974
Thanks guys – a cofferdam is very sensible. Anyone with any civil or coastal marine engineering experience – I just need some advice and to run a few ideas by you… if you could pm me that would be great 🙂
