Those stiffeners look a bit like those on Whitley cowlings, but wrong material – should be ally. Sorry, not much help.
Well done Cees
It looks truely excellent. I found that brake valve you were after – do you still need it?
Cheers
I thought he might have had Pagets disease.
I’m, sure you’re right Andy – especially as it’s green. Any part numbers?
Johnnie
The last item is a cowling fastener. The castings – maybe off the engine/magneto etc. Others may be able to ID those for you – where’s Merlin Pete…?
Looks a bit like a handle from a fire extinguisher.
I was wondering if anybody might be to tell me what the item shown below is.
It is about 8 1/2″ long, and seems to be made of copper. It also has a number of stamps including a large T, K38 in a circle, A9, 43, EW410 and a few more aI cannot make out.
I am unsure if it was originally flat, or if it may have been a clasp to hold something in place. I was told that it might be from a Hampden by the man who gave it to me.
Any help would be great,
Johnnie
Hi Andy
Exhaust stubs went to the BBMF from one high ground Whitley in the 1970s – they were just unbolted at the site and whisked off by helicopter!
There was also a dig at another site where engine parts were supposedly removed for the BBMF, but I doubt they were actually used as the engine in question had shattered into pieces. Certainly the metal was extremely well preserved.
Your best bet is to speak to someone who was in the BBMF at the time!
Hi Johnnie
No – it was not cleared – there was not much there when we did our recovery to start with however. Only items that could be used in the rebuild were taken. Certainly I have reports that some 20 years ago there was an oil cooler or radiator at the site – this had long gone by the time we visited.
The ground is very flat and broken up making the site very difficult to find even under the best of conditions.
Regards
Can anybody tell me if the crash site of Whitley BD295 has now been cleared. I know the Whitley project recovered some parts, but I wasn’t sure how much they cleared.
Johnnie
Sorry – no that’s just forum censorship! The missing bit should read c0ck.
Hi Jonnie
It’s a backing plate from a fuel ****.
Yes – looks like a pickup – probably for the outer wing joint.
The tubular rivets were designed to be used in outposts of the empire where electricity for welding might not be available!
I think it’s off a fire extinguisher.
Yes, it is a drift sight!
Hi Ian
Looks like a good repro – nice work, but even better, you won’t be needing it – that was a very good find.
Most engineers should be able to make you a batch of screws but they might be a bit pricier than you think. I have used a company down south called fastener solutions to get some ferrules made – i’m sure they could do it. Just google them!
