I’ve found it best to avoid leaving too quickly after the display has finished. On Sunday, you’ll have the London flypast return to DX (or maybe they’ll head home to their individual bases…?) after 5pm, so stick around for a while. You can also take an alternative route, heading towards Shuttleworth on the A505, then onto the A11 (?), which avoids the M11 holdups and is a more scenic route. It eventually takes you back to the Stanstead roundabout, so it would be idea for you.
Both days for me.
Any idea what’s in the mysterious crates that have apparently arrived outside Hanger 2? Oh and going off on a tangent slightly, my cousin called me earlier from Southend, saying that Princess Elizabeth had just flown over; any idea where she was going?
Its set to be at Biggin on the first weekend of September. That’s the only booking I can think of.
How about the Swedish J29 Barrel or a Lansen as the foreign visitor?
Here’s a pic of I-MRSV at Legends or was it still Classic Fighter then?
Any help on the date much appreciated.
Paul
I believe that belonged/belongs to Pino Valentay/Valenti (sp?), and is based in Italy. It appeared at numerous Legends’ in the 1990s, making its final DX appearence at FL2000.
I wouldn’t totally rule out the Breighton Me109 – the site says there’s more to be confirmed, so you never know.
As for the Fw190, I really have no idea.
Doesn’t it go something like this…
P51D ‘Ferocious Frankie’ – OFMC, DX
P51D ‘Twilight Tear’ – TFC, DX
P51C ‘Princess Elizabeth’ – TFC, DX (under restoration)
P51D ‘Susy’ – RAC, Breighton
P51D ‘Miss Helen’ – Robs Lamplough, Bristol?
P51D ‘Jumpin’ Jacques’ – Peter Teichman, North Weald
P51D ‘Big Beautiful Doll’ – Rob Davies, Woodchurch
P51D ‘Janie’ – Maurice Hammond, Hardwick?
Foreign:
P51D ‘Nookie Bookie IV’ – France
P51D ‘Damn Yankee’ – Holland, SHF
P51D ‘Old Crow’ – Sweden, RNLAF Historic Flight
P51D ‘Double Trouble II’ – Switzerland?
Any more in Europe I’ve missed? That makes a total of 11 P51Ds and 1 P51C in Europe 😀
Anyway, very nice photo, it just isn’t the same not seeing her in the air at DX 🙁
Though Trumper may be correct 🙁 , I did hear from an engineer at the VE-Day show that its going to be 10 years, so I guess things haven’t changed much over the past couple of years.
I’d vote for Robert Radcliffe’s superb 8th AF saga Under an English Heaven.
This would enable a comfortable mix of airborne action and East Anglian based plot development.
Agreed, a great book that could make a very good film.
Does he still fly the Tummelisa? What a cracking display that was at Biggin in 2003 🙂
I’m sure others can elaborate more on this matter, but isn’t it something to do with foreign warbirds not maintaining the high standards required by the CAA to perform in the UK? IIRC, there was a situation in 1997 where European warbirds were not up to CAA standards, and so couldn’t appear at UK shows. This changed the following year, and since then European warbirds have made appearances at UK airshows, albeit rarely.
It may also have something to do with the cost of getting them over.
Very nice.
How I’d love to see the French (Suez crisis?) marked Corsair at Legends 🙂
Thanks for the replies.
It woudn’t have been Alan Walker in Beech 18, would it?
Does anyone know who flew the other warbirds in the show today?
Thanks in advance.
Nice pics.
Was there any aerial activity worthy of note today?
