I think the “advanced” or international road map Super Hornet would be an obvious choice given the cost benefits of buying existing and proven technology combined with decades of experience with the legacy birds. Additionally, the short list of upgrades to the Super Hornet are less likely to end up in time and money consuming 5th gen growing pains as we have already seen with the Raptor and which seem to be abundant with the F-35. The F-35 won’t even be able to achieve IOC for foreign customers until 2019 when the block 3F software is released. With regard to the Typhoon, it doesn’t seem to be a good fit for Canada given the lack of AESA radar and limited A2G abilities. Being they’re not looking for an aircraft that’s ready tomorrow I’m sure there would be time to address those issues however I would suspect the already high price for the aircraft would make further upgrades an unattractive alternative to the F-35.

Thanks fellas, that’s exactly what I was looking for! I was never trying to imply that there was a connection between the G limitation and TVC. This whole question came up while trying to convince some friends that the flight demonstration at MAKS was limited by airframe stress on a test vehicle which was still undergoing intense evaluation and immature systems such as the TVC which were unlikely to be put to the test in front of an international crowd. I’m sure the last thing Sukhoi wanted was another SU-30 at Paris moment. The pictures were great! Thanks to all that helped me put this to rest.

Almost all the photos show a similar nozzle placement creating a somewhat asymmetrical look.

I took this photo at MAKS 2011……..

….it looks like the TVC was being used.

As djcross says, there are probably operating restrictions this early in the test programme.

I don’t think this photo indicates any TVC activity. The T-50 exhaust nozzles always have a slightly outward facing appearance, possibly due to a slight angular difference between the engines and aircraft centerline.
