Rationalize all you want, but this thread was started as apiece of anti-American wakefulness which avcomplishes nothing but make cheap political shots.
Curses. I totally forgot, and promise to go back to ridiculing the American fascination with guns, killing, and the need to be allowed to arm potential killers as soon as something happens to catch my eye within those parameters. Probably within three days, I should think.
Shall we discuss whether it will be someone going mad with a pistol or the police shooting another unarmed civilian? You choose, don’t limit yourself to my suggestions.
Of course, you could take up the baton left by your fellow countryman and explain why it is so damned necessary that, following a constitution written a couple of centuries ago which talks about an armed militia, all Americans should have the unquestionable right to buy and own guns so that their kids can take them to the local high school for a bit of target practise or an army reservist can arm himself to the teeth and shoot a few cops on a whim. And why is is acceptable for the police to shoot a black man in his car when he explains that he has a legal weapon in the vehicle when stopped for a tail light out, or even shoot an unarmed black man running away from a ‘routine’ stop because he hasn’t paid his child maintenance?
I believe I have said this before – RpR mentioned it several times but never came up with the actual proof – but you could also show examples of ‘law abiding members of the public’ preventing incidents by using their own weapons; I’m sure there must be one or two…
Of course, we should focus on the important things in this tragedy…
A British tourist who said last night’s truck attack in Nice ruined her shopping trip has apologised, saying her “words came out wrong” because she was so distressed.
Tourist Lucy Nesbitt-Comaskey who was in Nice on holiday when the horrific events took place told Sky News: “Maybe this is awful and maybe a bit selfish but it did spoil our shopping trip.
“We bought all this lovely shopping and now I can’t be bothered with it.
“It doesn’t mean anything now.”
Ms Nesbitt-Comaskey has since apologised and said she was “totally distressed” causing her words to come out wrong.
She wrote: “My sincere condolences to the French people who have lost their loved-one’s today in Nice.
“I’m deeply sorry if my interview with Sky News sounded uncompassionate. I was totally distressed and shocked. My words came out wrong.
“Once again sorry.”
Plus, as John Green will agree, any apology which has ‘sorry if’ in it is hardly an apology at all.
As you were; the coup failed.
An 80s musician…
Steve Young, co-writer of M/A/R/R/S’ iconic 1987 dance smash “Pump up the Volume” and co-founder of 4AD band Colourbox has died. 4AD announced the news in a tweet, calling Young a “true pioneer.”

SNAFU polish my boots boy so that I can kick RpR up the backside with them.
My reply would be disagreeable to Mr Boyle.
At the same time I’m wondering if a US forumite is going to start an ‘Only in Europe’ thread in light of the latest terror atrocity in France? If the concept of such a thread seems tasteless, then perhaps this thread is tasteless to American posters? Perhaps it is always easier to solve a country’s problems remotely.
Slight difference.
The majority of killings we have discussed in this thread have been of a domestic nature using legally held weapons or carried out by law enforcement officers on (generally) unarmed civilians, whereas incidents like that in France have been committed by religious maniacs for the purpose of striking terror into innocents.
Woo hoo, yip yip and, erm, yahoo?
RpR has declared this discussion ended!
Still, it won’t stop the killings.
Had to laugh at this…
According to the British Election Study, after controlling for age and education level, two of the biggest factors, Leave supporters were more likely to be PEOPLE WHO USE CAPITAL LETTERS WHEN TYPING.
Can we have Gojira (Godzilla…) on our side?
It would be threaten them with rifles that don’t work in boots that are uncomfortable, then nukes or drive Ladas on the right hand side of the road – and you know how John would hate that.
Let us not forget that usually these sorts of events demand a high liability insurance cover, usually £5-8m, which doesn’t come free.
Not chemically enhanced…?
Please provide Missouri details. —- Look it up it is online. You like to comment from a position of total ignorance so educate yourself.
Tried to, just trying to make sure it wasn’t the one in Minnesota that you had mistaken the location…
Your proof for your rhetoric other than your Carnac the Great opinion.
What on earth are you on about?
Your posts show that you seem to enjoy the status of being an ignorant moron, but then if it floats your boat go for it.
In this day and age, as ignorant morons go…are you still packing? Nothing seems to make a difference to you – but we know that you are utterly indifferent to other people – and care not one jot whether those shot are innocent, black or even (it seems) police. In Britain we don’t have massacres perpetrated every other day like you do, but then again the population do not have weapons as a standard right; to those who view from a distance it would appear easy to work out that freely available guns equals a recipe for mass murder and terror equals America as it seems to be at present. You, on the other hand, don’t care about other people and whether they get killed by your sacred guns, a motto that – if followed through – would ultimately (after a few years) would reduce the American population to near enough zero if nothing is done about it.
Yes, I know that won’t happen (either the scenario of America killing itself with guns or anything being done about it) and that even the possibility wouldn’t scare you, but that is how it appears to the outside world.
As usual you just respond with the childish level of —- oh yeah, well what if — yeah well what if — yeah well what if, therefore; I am done with your imperceptive rhetoric based on vacuous arrogance.
But post to your hearts content.
But you still haven’t convinced anybody (anybody actually been convinced by his arguments? Even remotely?) and just tell me I don’t understand the situation. So tell me the situation.
The Arabic for ‘crystal night’ is still ‘shame’.
No it isn’t, it is ليلة الكريستال.
You are an idiot.
Ah, the retort of those who cannot convince with those they disagree with. You know that thing about pointing fingers, where you have three other fingers pointing back at you?
Maybe one day you will be able to persecute those you deem to be idiots the way you feel most appropriate – you know, up against the wall, last fag, bang-bang – but at the moment all you can do is call them names.
What does the NRA have to do with the Texas shooting.
I never mentioned the NRA in connection with the Texas shooting. Presumable they would have been overjoyed that the shooter was allowed to have his weapons. Maybe they are upset that each gunman shot is one less membership fee?
Why don’t you tell us what they have to do with the shooting.
Obama was the one verbally trashing cops, starting with Missouri and not stopping, not the NRA.
Please provide Missouri details.
I have spoken with many mature blacks, who thought highly of King but have a very low opinion of the people the press lets speak for the black community.
If you ask them what King would think of the situation they, in part, say he would condemn it as it is totally opposite of what King’s speech was.
They made the Sulu in the latest Star Trek gay out of respect to the original, George Takei; he did not agree with the sentiment. QED you cannot put words into people’s mouths or assume what they would believe, no matter that they might be dead and unable to say yay or nay to the proposition.
Blacks commit a greater number of crimes, period so the number will be higher, period.
Simple mathematics.
Indeed. And a greater number of ‘executions’ by police are committed against blacks, both criminal and innocent; the point being that if the police were not a racist force then approximately 12% of police shootings of innocents would be against ‘persons of colour’, rather than over half.
Asinine statement based on moronic ignorance of my life.
Sorry, moronic research into your ignorant life came up with stuff that might frighten children.
Yes including the father of three of my nephews and nieces who went to prison for armed robbery.
Also two of the three black fathers of her other three children and many of their friends and relatives.
Wouldn’t that be a little like asking your views on gun control?
Sooooooooooooooooo…how does an aeroplane become historic?
Is it by age, and if so how old?
Is it after it leaves front line military service? Would that include all military service (thinking of the last Mustangs in use in El Salvador until 1984)?
Is it by some other way?
Just asking…
A Pulitzer prize winner who inspired a film…
US journalist Sydney Schanberg, whose reporting inspired the Oscar-winning Hollywood film, The Killing Fields, has died at the age of 82, the New York Times reports.
Schanberg worked for the Times and won a Pulitzer Prize for reporting the fall of Cambodia to the Khmer Rouge in 1975.
His colleague, Dith Pran, was unable to leave and his four-year ordeal inspired Schanberg’s work.
Schanberg died in Poughkeepsie after a heart attack earlier in the week.
His death was confirmed by Charles Kaiser, a friend and former Times reporter, the paper said.
In 1980, Schanberg described his Cambodian colleague’s ordeal of torture and starvation at the hands of the Khmer Rouge in a magazine article, and later a book called The Death and Life of Dith Pran.
Dith Pran eventually managed to escape to Thailand and died in 2008. It was he who coined the term “killing fields”.
