MarkG (from South Wales)
Well back when st athen had all the historic aircraft like the spitfires and other aircraft , he went all over wales with a patition to stop them moving to Hendon but he couldn’t stop it, then he came up with an Idea of finding an old hanger or building big enough to hold aircraft to maintain them back to flying standards, and have people on the dole / community service / volunteers ( I think my old man invented the idea of new deal ) to help do them up with training from staff at St Athan which he had arranged with St Athan but couldn’t find the funding to rent / buy a building so that plan went out the window.
when they shut down rhoose he said that if someone open an aircraft museum he would assist in anyway he could to start a new one, he also said that they was once offered a hanger ( Flying Club Hanger now ) on the otherside of the airfield when the museum was kicked off the airfield where the BAMC building is now the aircraft wouldn’t have got derilict and the museum may not of have gone bust.
So if you know anyone thinking of starting one please let me know.

When I was young my father was a member of the Rhoose museum (for his sins he never agreed with the managment on the markings and the way that they where looked after, but he wants to start another museum in south wales) I’ll never forget the viscount cafe effort they had there, the darkness of the vulcan, and watching my father and a few other puting the f100 together, but one of the last times I went down there with him they had received a BAC lightning F.53 ZF578 believed to be an ex saudi aircraft, at the time it was in bits and don’t think it was ever put together in Rhoose. (not sure) Anyway, it is now in Tangmere Military Aviation Museum near Chichester in West Sussex.
I have got some photos of it but can’t figure out how to get them onto this sight. Here are some links:
Lightning now:-
Tangmere Military Aviation Museum
Heres a picture of it whilst at Rhoose:- Rhoose Lightning
There was also a Phantom nose section Identity unknown, and wheres it gone ?????
Also I can tell you that one of the gannets possibly the AEW.3 was put on stand by incase it was needed for the falklands war, it wasn’t removed from the site but it was kept in service readyness (information via my father), and one of the gannets had its propellers removed to replace a set off another gannet still in service at the time (never saw them replaced)
I will ask my father to find the photos he took down there over the years.
Anyway if I find out more about any of the aircraft there I will post in to let you know
