Reverse-engineering modern stuff has hardly anything to do with advanced materials (except the engine department). Software is by far the biggest threshold preventing modern aircraft to be copied.

Arthur, I disagree. Advanced materials are basic for any A/c design.. specially military ones. I agree software also plays its part. But first you have to make all the components and then comes the software. Most of these advanced materials goes in places where heat is involved.. so mainly engines, wings, nose cone, engine intakes etc..

India plans air force boost among major challenges

    By Rahul Bedi JDW Correspondent
    New Delhi

The Indian Air Force (IAF) faces a crisis of depleting assets over the next decade, threatening its expanding operational challenges that include conventional and nuclear warfare, regional power projection and energy security and domestic counter-insurgency operations.

To transform itself from a tactical, status-quo force into a strategic one, to meet extended challenges, the IAF plans by 2025 to operate 35 combat and some nine support squadrons, including one comprising six Ilyushin Il-78 air-to-air refuellers bought in 2001 for INR8 billion to provide its fighters with enhanced endurance.
Senior officers said the IAF’s platform capability will be further augmented by net-centric warfare, secure communication, electronic warfare and an aerospace command to implement the air force’s evolving joint warfighting doctrine. This includes offensive counter-air operations to suppress enemy air defences, offensive air defence and counter surface forces campaign, planned jointly with land combat forces and launched in tandem with them.

Largely with Israeli help, the IAF plans to exploit the proposed Aerospace Command to develop a mobile ground-based imagery receiving and processing terminal for use by the army and the navy.

Through a complex web of locally developed satellites and launch vehicles and with sensors provided by Israel Aircraft Industries and Israel’s Elta Electronics, the IAF also aims to use the Aerospace Command to accurately target a varied range of indigenously designed, nuclear capable ballistic missiles.

“The IAF aims to achieve lethality through a combination of importing fighters and by selectively upgrading existing platforms and rendering them all capable of delivering beyond-visual-range missiles and precision-guided munitions (PGMs),” ACM Tyagi told JDW. The air chief also insists that maintaining numerical superiority in fighters is a priority for the IAF since “enhanced technological capability can never adequately make up for numbers

u are confusing two separate deals of PAF with one of IAF. PAF is trying to get as many old F-16s for free and in turn want to pay for the new ne. in reality the old F-16 are more important than the newer one. so it is two deals.
India wants to buy license and production know how so u should expect to pay huge for some one else developed R&D.

Star49, I am not talking about old F-16 pakistan is getting.. I am talking about the 80 or so F-16 deal..

what is the point in fitting Israeli avionics and weapons when they will be us based anyways?

I dont understand what you are trying to say.. anyway my suggestion is to get some F16 (whatever US is offering) and fit it will latest.. please read in case AMRAAM is not available or latest radar is not offered …blah blah.. :diablo:

The US will have the non modifaction of F-16’s sold to Pakistan in the contract of the deal.

And also i expect the contract to ensure the plane cant be given to China. Remember, China got an F-16 from Paksitan earlier and tried to RE it (but in vain)….in the 1980’s in exchange for ballistic millile tech know how.

China cannot easily RE american stuff when compared to russian stuff because American stuff uses lot of new materials which is the real tech in these systems. If u dont use these materials the engine or the A/c will not perform or even work as a single element… 😉

Guys, How hard it the buy a vanilla F-16 and modify it with latest avionics.. may be dumb question..

I am not sure Pakistan can do it because because it is part of ‘war on terror’ goodies..

What about India.. If India buys an F-16 or F-18 can it fit with israeli avionics and weapons…

Not a good example, as these two got a peace agreement.
A better example would be the fact that the US is selling weapons both to Israel and Saudi Arabia, which are officialy still enemies.
Either way, it won’t be the first time the US will sell weapons to two nations which are enemies. BTW, it’s not just the US to blame, it’s also France, Russia and even Israel. After all, it’s all about the money and other political interests.

Erez, I agree. It is all about money at last.. otherwise we wont be having any arms scandals all around the globe.. 😀

because i doubt us will allow the version PAF wants. the only way it is going to go through is F-16/F-18 for IAF/PAF are presented as peace dividend.

Star49, But India is paying in hard dollar currency… not like Pak where it is a part of aid ?..

It is possible Pak gets AMRAAM… Also AMRAAM requires special congressional approval.. So I am not sure it is done yet. I am pretty sure US will make sure that it will tracked so that it doesnt land in Beijing.. :dev2:

THE POINT IS THAT THE US HAS SAID THAT IT WILL NOT SUPPLY BVR MISSILES TO PAKISTAN

The F-16’s that pakistan is getting is BVR capable no doubt, but this capability will not be explioted.

And it is almost impossible to fit the SD-10 to it…..and the US must have that aspect covered in the contract as well because they were very unhappy when the pakistanis tried to fit their block 15 F-16’s with some chinese missiles(copied from the pythons)

Remember US will not allow any modifications :diablo:
