I remember this well, they did find them but I could not be sure of the location, as just described they had rotted away due to the make up of the soil in the area. this was covered well in the press at the time though with the geophysics images published.

Re the Defiant, If you can narrow the area down a bit I could do a sweep with the magnetometer.

Why is the Museum of Flight at East Fortune not getting one of the Concordes, is it down to runway length ? , if not it seems unfair to have four preserved south of the border and not a single example in Scotland !

    Mark Hanna

I was also at East Fortune in 98 and watched Ray and Mark Hanna dogfighting with the spitfire and buchon, I also have fond memories of them flying at the Fighter Meet displays in the late 80s and early 90s. I only met Mark on the one occasion, when he and one of the OFMC engineers (Smithy ?) brought the Mustang up to East Fortune for the PFA meet in August 1999 , only six weeks before his accident. Like others have said on this thread he always seemed to have time to stop and chat to people, on that particular day he even took the time to help an old wartime Lancaster pilot into the mustangs cockpit. I have a few pics of Mark with the Mustang that day and will always remember him taking off for the return trip to Duxford, he got the gear up and brought the Mustang round heading straight for the few of us who had waited to see him go, I will never forget him almost skimming the crops and pulling up over the hanger. That was the last time I saw Mark fly.

    RIP Mark
