Cheers Baz, always a pleasure to see photos of ex Bassingbourn Canberras – especially the insides.
When I get chance I’ll see if I have any pics of her whilst stationed down this way!

Ahh the old ‘when will the T4 fly again’ question. As Newquays resident a Canberra ‘expert’, let me put this to bed once and for all. The programme got it wrong. WJ874, aka VN799 will never fly again

She’s ex Bassingbourn OCU I believe, shame she didn’t remain airworthy!

No website as yet but there is a very active Facebook page on RAF Wethersfield which includes updates on the prospective museum.
Ross Stewart is putting a lot of time and effort into the venture and has the full support of the based authorities.
He has also produced a booklet on the history of Wethersfield which is available for a very reasonable price – the proceeds of which go towards the museum!

Going back to the emergency landing barrier it appears that it was used around 1969-70 to stop an F-100D that had not been fitted with a brake parachute by mistake. Does anyone know anymore details on this?

As has been said the ‘F’ model is pretty scarce over here, and I can think of no better place for this one than Wethersfield – seeing as they operated from there for many years.

And it’s clear that feelings for the type amongst ex airmen and ground crew alike still runs deep, as it does for the airfield itself.

Interesting information, thank you. I shall pass this information on to those who were asking!

Brilliant job by the team from GJD Services today who delivered and reassembled her. Thanks also to Gloucestershire Airport’s maintenance guys -and the airport generally – for their continued support. More pics in the gallery https://flic.kr/s/aHsjHQACMb

Great set of photos there. And as has already been said it would be interesting to hear how easily (or not) the Javelin came apart.
They seem to break down into a fairly reasonable load!?

Drove past Cardington last Sunday after visiting OW, and was pleased to see the huge airship hangars looking good after receiving some much needed attention

Strange how we remember things differently, as I thought it was a total lack of serviceable brake components that bought the project to a halt. Maybe it was a combination of things – either way it was a disappointing outcome from a project that had so much potential!

Unfortunately, the RAF Museum Reserve Collection, Stafford seem to have their own ideas.
The remains of R9371 are still sitting on the same transit pallet which they collected from the CARG premises at Innsworth almost eight years ago, together with a crate which contained an almost complete cockpit windscreen frame and the armoured glass bulkhead behind the pilot’s head; together with a lot more component parts that Tony Southern collected for the proposed restoration.
That’s why the remaining CARG members would rather have the two items mentioned be made available to someone who would actually make good use of them.

Have to agree with that. Although I have found the RAF Museum staff to be helpful and encouraging in the past, I made them a very good offer for something in very long term storage at Stafford that in all instances is only of any use / interest to me, and has absolutely no connection with them. The offer was politely but firmly declined, adding that the RAF Museum do not sell items to individuals from its reserve collection (even to established projects of over twenty years existence) and any trades will always go first to accredited museums!

Hope the Halifax items do go to a worthwhile cause, and will be seen to a wider public in the future.

Duggy, somewhere on Key is a thread I started a few years ago regarding antique shop finds.

Love the canopy / windscreen section. What was the asking price?

Very nice. A similar scheme I believe to that last used on the F-100D’s at Wethersfield before they left in 1970!

Nice thought but I didn’t think that diplomatic relations between Britain and the Russian federation were that good?!

Thanks for those links markb, that guy has a seriously impressive collection of types in his ‘man cave’. It shows great vision and imagination by him to collect what some others would turn their nose up at. And what a beauty that Vincent is.!
