Excellent story, and really good to see so much care going into the proper repainting of a Bloodhound!

Very nice John, love the contrast of old and new together.

Credit where credit is due, as from the photos she looks mint. Well done to all involved!

Good to hear. And the guy has owned it for 35 years. That is quite a good stretch…
Are there any other warbirds in the UK with as long or longer ownership by a single individual..?
T J
Several I should imagine, such as B-17 Sally B with Elly Sallingboe probably coming near the top regarding flyers. Also TFC’s Bearcat must be nearing 35 years with Stephen Grey !

I cannot get my head round these people who would rather hang onto an item than see an aircraft fly again.
Thats true to some extent, and in this case you may have a point. But it also depends on how other parties have treated you in the past. For instance if you have asked to do a deal on something that they’ve had and they have said no – then I can’t see why that attitude should change when the need is reversed !

Used to be a daily occurrence, albeit along much quieter roads. Scan shows a partly refurbished Wyvern S.4 travelling along the A37 from Westlands factory at Yeovil on its way to their facility at Merryfield.

Indeed, Charlie, I’m sure a mod will do the rest! 🙂

It’s a no brainier. The Ambassador is the sole survivor, bar none, therefore should be indoors already, as should be the Hermes fuselage!

Housing is expected on The former RAF Waterbeach as well. Utterly ridiculous the amount of housing that is both happening and is planned around Cambridge – with a token and far too late road improvement scheme only just being started.
The infrastructure such as roads, water, power and in particular hospitals just cannot cope as things are already!

Agree Post #29. However, if all those aficionados who want the base to be kept open could contribute, say, 10,000 GBP each for the next 10 years – AND provide ear-defenders for the people and sound-proofing for the houses
If Duxford would like to return to RAF ownership and base Javelins and Hunters there again then I’ll gladly chip in 😉
Rob
Thanks for posting this Sabrejet. Just amazing to still see significant pieces of mostly forgottten types still around today, although there’s probably some smaller items still tucked away in private collections or museum stores, as is usually the case!
Rob
Very good, I wonder if it said “The Bitch” on the other side!

Indeed it is the local economy and employment that will be hardest hit, but from an aviation point of view its a very sad loss, particularly for me with so many memories of air shows there with my late father – not to mention endless Sunday afternoons sat in the car in the little viewing area that’s now gone, watching the comings and goings of so many different types.
Have to say that I always thought Mildenhall would be the last of the US bases to close. Hey ho!

As keeps being repeated here, it is not up to MAM to scrap it, or to make it known to the preservation world. It is owned by the NMUSAF, who are the sole arbiter of what happens to it should MAM wish to terminate the loan agreement.
But if they do wish to part with it, then making it known and giving others the chance to contact the NMUSAF about a possible trade or purchase is surely in the best interests of the airframes future, before it’s too late to do so!

Mark, I guess it could of come from a volunteer – with or without authority to do so.
On no account was this thread meant as an attack on the Midland Air Museum per se, as I for one also admire the hard work that goes on there towards aircraft and artefact preservation. But I’m also aware of several instances of airframes or items being scrapped (not at MAM I might add) without others having the chance to intervene or save them. But then I guess if it were about to scrap their spares F-4 then I’m sure the MAM would indeed make it known to the preservation world before hand, if at all possible!
