In the absence of a correct Type.2 Mk.1 retractable mounting (if you know of one or similar available then please get in touch), for a bit of fun i decided to temporarily display my Wyvern spec gunsight on an alternative spec mounting.

Every year its difficult to pick out a favourite, but the sight and sound of the P-38 always sends shivers down my spine. Considering its a fighter its just an amazing aeroplane, and a welcome contrast to the single engine types!

Bit surprised that no comment has been made about the three mustangs having a moment at one point with all three going in different directions with number three very nearly lossing it as it came over the top at a very low rate of knots. Very well done for the pilot to hold on to it.

They did appear to be getting close to each other, and to me it looked as if the no2 (the visiting P-51) decided he was too close to no1 (Ferocious Frankie) to follow him over into the loop and aborted, thus leaving no3 (Miss Velma) with some very quick thinking to do. And yes at one point he did look close to stalling. But, as usual a top pilot made the correct decision and then rejoined with appropriate timing. 🙂

Your second point is an interesting one Snoopy, and personally i think a big opportunity was missed to do such a thing when they started breaking up former RAF West Raynham in Norfolk. Back in the nineties it was voted the best preserved 1960’s RAF aerodrome :(.

Personally i would have to say no. There is after all already Legends which as someone has hit on is a ‘special’ weekend of piston warbirds. But that is predominantly WW2 orientated in its selection of airshow acts, with no jets being allowed in the programme.
So for me one of the best airshows i’ve attended with a good variety was Kemble around 2 or 3 years ago. Classic piston (Spitfire, Hurricane) classic jets (Sea Vixen, Venom, JP’s, Vulcan etc), modern jets (Typhoon, Hawk), airshow ‘circus’ acts (Breitling Stearmans), and a couple of very impressive large scale model aircraft during the interlude. Couple this with quite an impressive static line up of VC-10, Canberra, Hunters, Meteor, AN-2 etc which meant there was pretty much something for everyone. AND everything was capable of operating from the airfield too, giving the crowd abit more intimacy with the participating aircraft and crews.

But, as i said, just my opinion 🙂
