When the newly overhauled Merlins are fitted, whats happening with the removed engines? Overhaul, stored as is or are they spoken for?

Thanks for the heads up Steve, i’m stunned by that news. Remember seeing him when he was head of Volvo’s BTCC team around 1995.
A man of great authority and respect.

    RIP.

Bit out of my league this one but what about the Bristol Mercury.. especially in the Gladiator? Very sweet and smooth sounding, but whats it like from the cockpit?

Yes i second that Timbo… far better to have an actual working and moving example than ‘just’ a static museum piece.
And we all owe a debt of gratitude to the likes of the Brunty boys and those down at Gatwick who put in monumentous amounts of time, effort and money to keep our aviation heritage alive and moving.

Also bear in mind me109g4 that if something is kept in such a live condition it also gives it a far better chance of someday making it back into the air.. should money, resources and protocol allow.

Very commendable and i shall be signing the petition for the retention of these buildings. Can i just ask which building are they, as i cannot see a mention of them specifically. Also is there any chance of the control tower being preserved.. or has that been demolished already?

Excellent report and photos Phil. Love the ones of the crews taxiing by.. just shows the sheer bulk of the aircraft in comparison to the crews. And even now with the wings swept right back they still look incredibly futuristic.

Going slightly off thread it reminds me of when i used to watch the 111’s operating at Lakenheath. At the time you just took them for granted, but maybe you don’t really appreciate what your watching until they’re gone forever!

Thanks for that wieesso. Now thats how a country should say farewell to a long serving and much loved aircraft, but more importantly what a fitting way to remember aircrew lost while flying the type and serving their country!

Sad news. Makes you wonder what caused the loss of all three engines. I wonder if there being no post crash fire is a possible clue?
We’ll see what the investigators find out.
