Yes the majority of Wyverns were first flown from Merryfield, as the grass runway at Yeovil was considered rather tight following the fatal loss of the 2nd TF.2 prototype VP113, when Mike Graves crashed into some council housing following engine failure.
As your father recalls they were towed to Merryfield on their own undercart.
I’m sure someone must have some photos of them wending their way along the A303.

Personally i think the reaction of the Corsair pilot says it all. It was close.. and close enough for him to take immediate evasive action in pulling up hard. Also remember what the closing speeds of the relative aircraft would of been.

The camera may lie, but his reactions don’t!

The Fury looks like the one that had a mishap a while back but is I believe being rebuilt.

You are correct David. Just found this distressing although spectacular photo, and apparently it has been repaired and is now airworthy again. 🙂
