Flew from the states to Norway and back in Jan. Several in our party had lage camera kit and we had no problems taking it on the plane. DO NOT CHECK CAMERA GEAR IN BAGGAGE. Lost a telephoto that was in checked baggage several years ago..busted lock…lens gone…learned that lesson. Carry the kit. All of it!

Yup, the Avon Park range is near Sebring and they still race cars over at the old Airfield. The range is OFF LIMITS as they still use it for live fire exercise. They used to use the beaches off of St Petersburg here. I have found some bits of shrapnel at the park(Ft Desoto) south of town.

My old boss trained in P-40s straffing the beach targets off shore. There were something like 255 bases in Florida alone during the War.

How about this one, Harare, Zimobwe. Is that a Cranberry with the Daks?
There is another one out of frame to the NW on the tarmac.

Doesn’t everything boil down to how much it will cost?!?

Kenya, Mombassa, is this the one?

No new news is bad news. But the FAA will be investigating the “new” crash sites, adding them to the known site list, trying to close some “missing” files. Here is a snippit from CNN

“”Once the search for Fossett is over, or significantly scaled back, inspectors from the Federal Aviation Administration likely will be sent to each of the newly discovered wrecks. They will try to identify the pilots and bring closure to their families, agency spokesman Ian Gregor said.

No human remains have been found at the crash sites discovered so far. But that’s not a surprise, given their age and that the region is populated by coyotes and mountain lions.

News of the old wrecks has prompted inquiries from people wondering if the pilots or passengers may be long-lost family members.””

“Over 90 pictures took two hours to resize them”

There are programs that will do that pronto. Photoshop being one of them. Set up a new folder with a copy set of your pics, record an “Action” resizing and saving the files, pick the folder and walk away. leaves more time for important things like browsing through this forumn!

If you want to have fun trying to “guess the AC” do a google sat view of the bombing range at Avon Park Bombing range in the south central peninsula of Florida. They have a dummy airfield set up with a number of target AC parked there. Go due south of Orlando 50 miles or so.

Didn’t find a pic of it other than the one you have posted, just this description on a fishing site. The profile matches/sans engines.

On approach from the southwest end, you can see the old plane wreck before the threshold on the right, a Lockheed Loadstar. The military said it’s been there 20 years.”

Lockeed Loadstar, found it on a fishing sight for Guadalupe Island. Looks like engines were stripped long ago.

Here is an interesting link to “Cold War” shoot downs. It does show that the Russians had a shoot first ask questions later attitude, but a lot of them were In airspace or even overland. Just because they were and are paranoid does not mean we wern’t watching them, in many cases, watching very aggressively.

Didn’t know they had one at Barksdale AFB, LA. Have a cousin stationed there, He’s a Nav trainer for the BUFF crews over there. They won’t be flying it I reckon unless it’s during a hurricane!

Some(egads-quite some) years ago, cannot come up with what year, while heading into the huge airshow at MacDill, Tampa Florida. As I was crossing the acres of parking to get to the flight line, this giant, camoflaged delta shaped monster loomed up over the hangars in a steep bank belching fire and smoke. I don’t think I have ever seen anything that big turn that sharp, that low! And the sound. WOW! She landed by the time I got to the flightline and they kept her well back from the throng. My first and last to see her, unless I should get over the pond at some point. Don’t figure she will be visiting here again:(

The number is up to 8 old wrecks found, the latest being an old US Navy wreck(sorry no additional info given). The story also stated that an estemated 150 GA aircraft have gone missing in this general area in the last 50 years! The Bermuda triangle has nothing on the Rockies!

It would probably take the family of the missing tempest pilot in front of the TV cameras carrying on to get their attention. If they see no benefit, they don’t want anything to do with it.

The FW190 raising was pushed through by a small group of aviation enthusiasts who managed to get higher ups on board by making the recovery part of naval training exercise to find and retrieve! They do have to play with their toys and get experience anyway don’t they?!?

I am still astounded by the Herdla FW190 recovery though, when in Norway in January, I had the honnour to meet some of the recovery team and see some bits of the AC. Very cool!
