Yep, the Lancastrian, the turrets were removed and the front and rear of the plane was made more streamlined, could only carry around 9 passengers.

According to the program the real one actually flew, is this true? This would of course make it the first successful powered flight, although it doesn’t make it clear whether it was just a short hop off the ground. I heard that the Wright Brothers only gave their plane to the Smithsonian on the condition that theres was recognised as the first powered flight, so this would stop it being more well known (also heard about a powered flight in Russia 1900/1901 as well)

Probably because the Beaufighter Mk II (fitted with Merlins) had terrible handling characteristics, so pilots would need to be very careful and experienced to fly it (well no doubt they would be anyway). I think the worst problem with it was that it tended to swing a lot on take off, not good with parked aircraft nearby e.t.c.

Brilliant, how on earth did he down a Do 17 with a Dak though? Probably the only case of a Dakota bringing down an enemy aircraft, as far as i’m aware anyway. Sounds like an amazing chap, the world has lost another great man

Good to hear about the progress on the Beaufighter, will be almost surreal to see her complete and flying to me after seeing her in hangar 2 for so long. Beaufort restoration is really interesting Setter, wasn’t aware of that.

Thought this was typical – when they make howlers on things you know about, it does make you wonder how accurate things they report on that you know nothing about are…

In the meantime I suggest we all move to China and open ‘English take-aways’ on every corner, whilst there’s a buck to be made. 😮

Good idea, maybe could bring back one of the Stirlings from there with the money earned 😀
