Ah cheers – do you know the ID or any idea of what’s happening with it? When I went flying there a mate saw it and when he told me was quite surprised. Could be an SNJ, I think the only major visible difference is the deck landing hook
That’s a shame – any idea where it’s going to go? Shame Leicestershire Museums don’t make a dedicated building so the rare and interesting aircraft they have (G-AGOH, Taylorcraft plus C/2, Reid and Sigrist Desford and Auster J4) can go on display, I think their Taylorcraft is the oldest Auster product surviving
Here’s a few taken on my Auster related travels

MagicChamps Aeronca which I was lucky enough to fly – unfortunately being a shorty doesn’t help as the controls were only just reachable with my arms and legs!

Piper at Eggesford, think it’s an AE1, apparently it’s a Pearl Harbo(u)r veteran

Taylorcraft at Leicester airport

Another one at Leicester, I think there’s a third one there somewhere
A good few being rebuilt in the uk. I make it the following ones:
Mk1, G-HRLI, Hawker restorations
Mk1, P3717 – Hawker restorations, possible two seater
Mk1a, Rick Roberts.
Mk2 – Hawker restorations
Mk2b, G-CBOE, Classic aero engineering.
Mk? G-HRLO – Hawker restorations
Plus a good few stored.
Be very surprised if P3717 would be restored as a two seater – she was statically rebuilt by Steve Milnthorpe, and she’s a genuine battle of britain veteran, downing a dornier
I read that the Comet was, haven’t heard about the Neptune and Britannia though. Is there much extra space in the two hangars at the top? Shame the great line up of the Shorts SB5, English Electric P1 and Lightning has been depleted. Also, do you have any shots of the new building?
Very nice – do you know when her next runs will be? Will definitely try and get to the museum one day, especially to see those two nice Whirlwinds on display
Fantastic, cheers – do you know if they plan to complete the Fairey Battle or just leave it as it is?
Cheers for the pics Martin – was thinking today whilst freezing my round bits off at Bruntingthorpe “Boy I can’t wait to go down to Eggesford again when the weathers good!” Good to see (part of) the Mk III as well, I like the matching prop covers on them all!
I think G-AMTA may be the toy of our very own Joe Petroni! Nice pic Consul, I take it that’s the Agricola? Read somewhere that it should be flying now, would love to see that at a fly in!
😀 😀 How did you know! 😮
Rob, thats some restoration project you’ve got there! I guess it will literally allow you to do a ground up restoration. Have you got much more than just the airframe?
Erm, not really! I was given the frame, but was later given bits and pieces, so i’ve got door windows for about three Austers, nuts and bolts, which althouh don’t look like much are vital and the costs soon add up if I had to buy them, rear floorboard, brakes, tailwheel and the tailwheel holder and a few other bits. Currently have some bits at home for cleaning up, i’m probably the only 18 year old with an auster tailwheel and door windows under his bed!
Oh, and yet again i’m featured in an Auster club magazine! This time you can see my head in the background, signed copies available for anyone that wants them! :p
Ok then, let’s get rid of aircraft in museums which according to the museums title don’t belong in there – bye bye airliners at IWM Duxford then!
Do the militaria stalls do any de-activated weapons? Always fancied a nice Lee Enfield no 4…
The camouflaged Auster with the red spinner is G-AOCR, looks really nice as it’s just as she’d have been in military service except with a dH Gipsy Major fitted post war.
G-AKWS is a very unusual one because of her more modern Lycoming engine (think it’s the same as the one fitted to the Mk 11), odd tail and rear side windows, hadn’t seen that one before.
Probably the same reason the RAF Museum has things like Mustangs, a B17, Junkers 88 etc
