Well, certainly makes it stick out! Shame they’re not going to return it to taxiing condition.
Sorry to drag this one up, just wondered if anyone knew anything more about this Hurricane, ie when is it’s expected completion date seeming as the one rumoured earlier in the thread should be soon, be great to have another Hurri in the air!
Is the ARC responsible for the IWM Bolingbroke restoration as well? (Heard it’s on hold). Just wondered if you knew what the plans for this were now, heard it isn’t going into airspace, was wondering if it would be restored a few years later in camouflage, or still going into trainer yellow? Although it is good to see aircraft in unusual colours, recently two rare aircraft have already gone in target tug colours, the RAF Museums Tempest and the IWM’s Mossie
Good idea Les, e-mail on it’s way to them – for anyone that got confused and couldn’t find the e-mail address like me (finally found it on the location page), it’s midlandairmuseum@aol.com
Can’t describe how much this museum means to me, my earliest memories of planes come from this place, and luckily it’s local enough so when I need a quick aviation fix after studying too hard it’s perfect!
Out of interest whilst people vote for the generic Spitfire -which do they consider the most beautiful out of the marks ? I am a fan of the MK.VIII.
Either the Mk I, II, V or IX for me – if I could have any dream Spit it would be a Mk II in brown/green camo with a white spinner, mmmmmm 😀
Looking good, what other aircraft at MAM are being repainted/next in line for repaints? Really good to see them in colours, especially the Hunter and Canberra
East Kirby has a very nice one, Yorkshire Air Museum’s isn’t bad as well. Last time I was there, RAF Syerston had theirs as well
Yep, been done, was also a recent doctored photo of one on the internet, but this is the real story http://www.theaviationzone.com/factsheets/c130_forrestal.asp
Ah that sounds great Andy, what colours will they be? Will have to get myself down to Bristol to see that
Ah cheers, saves me a walk upstairs and rooting through my cupboards! Also noticed from your list you missed out the DC3 Ollie. Also be interesting if you describe how they used the models in the film, etc lining up models on a raised platform while in the distance real b17’s took off, fooled me until I read the article, and using gas cylinders to give off the look you get of heat rising off the ground
For vehicles, I recognised;
Willys Jeep
GMC CCKW ‘Deuce and a Half’ 2 1/2 ton truck (with later open cab)
Dodge 4×4 Command car
Dodge 4×4 ambulance
David Brown bomb tractor
Even quite a few of the vehicles were in fact 2d ‘cut outs’ like some of the B17’s, the After the Battle magazine article states the name of the owner of the Willys Jeep which carried the Memphis Belle crew, may be able to try and track him down
Think this is the same one shown a while back, but very impressive
Although personally i’ll miss the Mk IV nose as I think the Blenheim IV looks great, will be really good to have a Mk I, and will mean the UK will soon have a good mix of Blenheim/Bolingbrokes – an airworthy Mk I, a Mk IV in RAF colours at Hendon, a Mk IV in target tug (I think) colours at Duxford in airspace, and also the East Fortune one, although don’t know what they’re planning to paint theirs.
It’s a Commer Q2 tractor – Art Toys do a 1/76th scale model with a trailer, however Blitzkrieg Models, a distributor of rare foreign kits in the UK, have the tractor on it’s own, made by Art Toys for them – it would be perfect for putting on the Queen Mary Trailer. Blitzkrieg models web address is http://www.britland.co.uk/blitzkriegmodels/ from what i’ve seen the model of the Q2 is very nice, the Bedford OX tractor you get with the RAF recovery set is too small for 1/76th anyway so it’s worth replacing.
Try http://www.imdb.com and search for Memphis Belle, last time I went on there there was at least one person who had starred as an extra on the film who might be useful
