They seem to make a big enough deal about Hiroshima and the ‘peace memorial’ there etc, apparently the government there send a letter of protest each time a nuclear weapon is detonated in the world, maybe our government should send one for each POW that suffered at the hands of them

Personally I think the second comment is one of the most ridiculous things i’ve ever read, although i’m only a teenager and have never met a veteran of the far east campaign, I still feel strongly about the terrible things the japs did – as well as the horrifying story of the POW that was found hiding in a house, i’ve also read a story of a guy that was a POW, living in remote Scotland, never talking about what happened, until one day he was going for a walk with his family and came across a Japanese couple. These were the first japanese people he had seen since the war, and he instantly fell to the ground, curled up in a ball, crying and trembling because of what had happened to him.

What I find even more insulting is the fact that japanese history books censor what happened in WW2, makes me feel like printing out a book of japanese atrocities in WW2, in japanese, and standing on a street corner in Tokyo handing it out

Cheers, I know of the 43rd Wessex Recce lot, I was in contact with Ian West a few years ago (e-mails to him just bounce back now though), and i’ve got the address of the other guy who owned two, but who left the hobby and gave one as a gate guardian to a nearby museum. Do you know any contact details for the one in Suffolk?

    Cheers, Rob

Lets see, buy a big house, Aston Martin (which sort? Errrrm, I dunno, all of em!) Jaguar S type and XK, small airfield next to it, have a nice collection of ex-lifeboats and military vehicles, restore or make a replica of a Beaufighter VI to fly, as well as an Auster III, early Hurricane I with DH Prop. Then i’d just do whatever I want for the rest of my life, maybe write a few books, do the airshow circuit in my planes a few times, cruise around the world in one of my ex-lifeboats etc, ahhh I can wish

Probably the time when a mate just gently threw a ballpoint pen at me, I ducked down for it to go over me and thought it fell off, so I stood up properly, cue my mate falling on the floor laughing, felt my head and somehow the tip of the pen had got stuck in the top of my head and had a pen sticking out of the top of my head, had to yank it out! Head was bleeding a bit, no idea how on earth it happened though

Beautiful Hurricane, they look great with the DH prop. I’d love to get the chance to go to Finland to see her one day.

I think one tank and a Harrier is all the hardware it can take as there are so many corners and turns.

I have yet to find anybody who thinks it is any good!

Don’t forget the Trabant! Think theres also one of those NFS trailers from WW2, apart from that, that’s it. What is actually there? I’ve never considered visiting before

The Crossley Q fire tender is supposed to be at Cosford, although i’ve never seen it there. Would be good to see the Jeep in British colours, perhaps in RAF far east colours next to the Thunderbolt at Hendon. I’ve also just remembered the 1948 Scammell Scarab mechanical horse at Hendon, in desert camo, was surprised to see one there as they were normally used by British Railways and other haulage companies here in the UK. If you ask me, the vehicles are just as interesting as the aircraft, then again i’m a big military vehicle fan.

What’s the chair thing actually for then? Think i’ve seen a similar mount used by the Home Guard during 1940 as an improvised aa gun, but also reminds me of a similar mount used on armoured cars

You’re too quick for me Guzzineil.

Does anyone remember seeing the large unrestored RAF bowser (just like the Airfix Kit)that used to appear at Duxford for the Military vehicle days.

I haven’t seen it there for years.

    Septic.

Sorry for bumping up the thread, but do you mean the Bedford QL bowser? She’s in hangar 4 now I think. Duxford and Hendon have quite a lot of aviation related vehicles, at Duxford I can think of

    Bedford QL fuel bowser
    Thompson refueller
1930’s tracked tractor (think it might be a Fordson, not sure)
    Fordson WOT barrage balloon lorry
Standard Beaverette mk 3 small armoured car (used by the RAF regiment)
Morris Light Reconnaissance Car mk I (used by RAF regiment, in Land Warfare Hall, Normandy exhibition)
Theres also a WW2 fuel trailer behind the scenes somewhere, rusting away.

    Hendon

Ford Model T pickup truck (RFC)
    Crossley Tender (RFC)
    Trojan light van
Humber Light Reconnaissance Car mk III
    David Brown tractor
Post-war aircraft tractor (not sure what it is)
    AEC Mantador missile carrier
    Austin K9

Edit – forgot the Fordson 817 Barrage balloon lorry in the B of B hall as well. There’s also a Jeep by the B17.

They also had a Rolls Royce silver ghost armoured car, don’t know where that is now though. Cosford has quite a few vehicles as well, can only remember a David Brown tractor, Bedford QL bowser and AEC Matador 6×6 refueller, and Elvington has a good selection too.

Good point Alanl, personally I like the AAM, only chance i’ve had so far and probably ever will to crouch down right under the fuselage of a B17 and get as close as I want to the belly turret etc
